We safeguard and restore wetlands for people and nature.
Over ons
We are dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. Our vision is a world where wetlands are treasured and nurtured for their beauty, the life they support, and the resources they provide. Based mostly in the developing world, we have 20 regional, national or project offices in all continents and a head office in the Netherlands. We work in over 100 countries and at several, very different scales to tackle the most pressing problems affecting wetlands. With the support of dozens of governmental, NGO and corporate donors and partners, we support over 100 projects. Our work ranges from research and community-based field projects to advocacy and engagement with governments, corporate and international policy fora and conventions. Wetlands International works through partnerships and is supported by contributions from an extensive specialist expert network and tens of thousands of volunteers.

"Protecting and restoring forests, peatlands, grasslands and wetlands could provide one-third of the reduction of global emissions needed by 2030, in addition, of course, to the broader societal benefits that we sometimes don’t talk about enough, but should. Like improving health, creating employment, and reducing poverty, all come from a more nature-positive future." Mary Schapiro Nature4Climate https://lnkd.in/eghVEUBw

Yesterday, EJF's Brazil Programme Lead Dr. Luciana Leite spoke at the “Road to Belém” event at European Parliament, along with an impressive group including the host Dr. Annalisa Corrado MEP, speakers Dr. Florika Fink-Hooijer, Dr. Chris Baker, and His Excellency Pedro Miguel da Costa e Silva, and moderators Dave Keating and Anna Cavazzini MEP. The panel spoke on the vital need for wetlands protection to be a key part of climate action, highlighting how international cooperation, mobilising funding and European leadership to support biodiversity, the climate and Indigenous communities are crucial. This panel came at a time when fires continue to rage through the Pantanal wetland. The disaster happening there is proof of the world’s failure to recognise the interdependence of biodiversity and the climate crisis. The lack of action to end our carbon emissions and the pressure we are putting on our ecosystems with agricultural expansion and other industrial development cannot continue. Speakers also discussed how the EU can play a key role in mobilising investment and delivering tangible outcomes for wetlands, offering a brighter, more resilient future. As Brazil prepares to host COP30 in Belém next year, we ask our leaders from the EU and Brazil to sign the first ever Wetlands Partnership and channel resources to protect and restore the Pantanal. Wetlands are vital for biodiversity, people’s livelihoods and food security, and the climate. It’s time to take this hopeful discussion and turn it into action. Kenya establishes Global Mangrove Alliance national chapter Kenya has officially launched the Global Mangrove Alliance-Kenya chapter following a meeting of key stakeholders in Mombasa. This alliance aims to advance mangrove conservation in line with the GMA global goal to increase mangrove cover by 20% by 2030. The gathering brought together key government agencies and non-state actors to align on national targets and initiatives as well as identify areas of collaboration. GMA-Kenya was founded by Conservation International (CI), International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Wetlands International (WI), and WWF-Kenya. The initiative is supported under the Save Our Mangroves Now! Project which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)through WWF Germany.

"Home to over two million residents, Colombo is built on and around a massive network of wetlands. In 2018, Colombo became one of the 18 Ramsar wetland cities in the world – an accreditation which recognises cities for their commitment to restore, safeguard and value wetlands, with 25 new cities added to the list in 2022. As Colombo is located in a river basin, the city is naturally prone to floods. Colombo's wetlands act as a flood buffer, with 40% of floodwaters draining into wetland areas. They also sink carbon, purify the air and control temperatures. " https://lnkd.in/gsHma5di
