𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐚 ZOA is attending the General Assembly of the Grand Bargain in Geneva. This unique forum brings together humanitarian actors, including governments, donors, UN organizations, and INGOs, to discuss and commit to improving our humanitarian system and increasing our impact. As a signatory and only Dutch INGO present, ZOA believes in collective action and honest discussions to make our work more effective and localized, supporting local leadership and capacity. Key topics include risk sharing, addressing increasing needs with decreasing budgets, scaling up effective approaches, and developing Anticipatory Action, innovative financing, and the nexus approach. We discussed the Nexus approach and emphasized that it is at the core of our organization. We are pleased with the ongoing dialogue about the importance of the Nexus approach on this platform. ZOA firmly believes in the peace Nexus approach, which involves investing in and connecting our humanitarian, development, and peace efforts. However, we also expressed our concern about the challenges in securing funding for the Nexus agenda. We still have an interesting afternoon full of sessions about innovative funding, and how the Grand bargain signatories can improve our collaboration on country level. #GrandBargain #Nexus #Development

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐔𝐤𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞 “I am incredibly grateful to all the ZOA staff and the people whose money saved the homes of people like me,” exclaims Volodymyr Karpovych from Prybuzke, Ukraine. ZOA, with funding from EU Humanitarian Aid, provided him with money to restore the roof of his house, replace seven windows and the front door. All of it was damaged as a result of heavy shelling by the Russian army. On the night of the outbreak of full-scale war, Volodymyr did not sleep well. A bad feeling did not allow him to relax. The first explosions were on the outskirts of Mykolaiv, which is less than 20 kilometers from Prybuzke. His family immediately packed up and by mid-afternoon left for the west of Ukraine. Volodymyr was left behind with his pets and animals, which, like his house, he simply could not leave unattended. After all, this was all his family had gained in half a lifetime. During the shelling, he hid with his cat and dog in a pit for car repairs in his garage. It turned out to be the safest place, even compared to the cellar. Food was running out quickly and there was no supply of drinking water, so that was the biggest need for a very long time. Also, with the onset of autumn and winter cold, the most urgent issue was to create a warm and dry room in the damaged house. The first year of the war was the most difficult, but the cohesion of the villagers, the help of the authorities and the military allowed him to survive. In general, a new chapter in life was the meeting with ZOA employees who promised to help with the repair of the house. And so it happened. With the money Volodymyr was able to quickly restore his home. “I thank God for these people and their organization, which was able to come right to my damaged house and help me restore it quickly and efficiently,” he states. “From the moment the house could again protect me from the rain and cold, I felt the strength to live and work on. Now I'm looking forward to welcoming my family to the house restored by your organization.” #EUHumanitarianAid #EUSolidarity

In the last weeks, more than 200.000 people even fled from Lebanon to Syria. In response, the Christian Emergency Relief Cluster (𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘫𝘬 𝘕𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘩𝘶𝘭𝘱𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳) launched an emergency campaign to provide crucial support to those in need. 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚: 𝐙𝐎𝐀 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐟 “The needs are huge,” says Antony Caleesious, director of ZOA in Nigeria. More than 200,000 people in Borno, northeastern Nigeria, have lost everything due to severe flooding in September. ZOA was able to provide immediate relief and is now helping affected families rebuild their lives. Borno is home to the rebel group Boko Haram. The inhabitants of this area have already suffered greatly in recent years. The natural disaster has now added to that. Many people who were already vulnerable have lost everything. ZOA has been present in the area for a long time. “Because we were already in the area, we were able to start providing meals very quickly after the devastating flooding,” says Antony. ZOA set up a kitchen in the Gubion refugee camp. In addition to providing direct food aid, ZOA also sees the need to help affected families rebuild their lives. The government of Borno State is making efforts to quickly provide people with housing again. However, this process will probably take longer than expected, says Antony. “The affected areas remain contaminated, posing serious health risks to those who return home, if there are any left. There is also an urgent need for sanitation and access to clean water to prevent disease outbreaks.” ZOA is therefore committed to promoting hygiene in refugee camps and is also working to clean up polluted water sources. Many people lost their property and sources of income due to the floods. ZOA therefore wants to support them in rebuilding their lives, says Antony. “This support will be vital to help families regain their stability and ensure their resilience in the long term.” #Nigeria #flooding #relief

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐲𝐦𝐲𝐫’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 “ZOA helped restore my house quickly and with high quality,” says Volodymyr Karpovych Kobach (76) from the village of Prybuzke in eastern Ukraine. When the war broke out in this region, Mykolaiv, his family members fled to the west of the country. Volodymyr decided to stay to take care of his pets and domestic animals. He survived the shelling, but his house got severely damaged.
