🧑🏾 Leadership and decision-making looks simple until you’re the one wearing the shoe. It’s only when you walk in it that you understand where it hurts. For me, true leadership is about stepping into discomfort with courage, embracing tension and paradox—not to merely resolve them, but to create spaces where tough questions can be asked, dissenting voices are encouraged, and uncertainty can coexist with intention. 👉🏾 Leadership isn't just about providing answers; it’s about fostering an environment where different perspectives are honored and complexity is acknowledged. 👉🏾 Future-focused leadership goes beyond the traditional, solution-oriented model, valuing shared ownership and agency over centralized authority. In this vision, the leader is not a distant “knower” but a facilitator of collective wisdom, an advocate for voices that disrupt, rethink, and reshape the status quo. 👉🏾 It requires a commitment to equitable knowledge-sharing and cross-disciplinary learning, embracing the “messy” and the “unresolved” as integral parts of the process. 🔺 Leaders are entrusted with the care and well-being of their people. But who, in turn, takes care of leaders? I find myself empathizing with those in leadership, who so often stand exposed to constant scrutiny, carrying the weight of expectations and criticism. ☝🏾 From the outside looking in, it’s easy to say, “If I were them, here’s what I’d do or say.” But this assumes we face the same constraints, the same stakes. 👭🏾 The stakes are especially higher for Black women, women, indigenous folks, people of colour and people who carry historically and systematically undervalued identities. 👉🏾 Leaders make choices with ripple effects on people, finances, well-being, and survival. Decision making at top leadership level is not just about a single issue but a matrix of intersecting concerns, all of which are deeply consequential. ❗ So before casting judgment or placing demands, it’s worth pausing to ask: ⚫ Am I truly aware of what’s at play? ⭕ Do I understand the full picture? ⚫ Can I even begin to grasp the weight of those shoes they wear?

🌍 Reflecting on Scaling Hope, Justice, and Belonging at Diversity Nordic Summit 2024 🇩🇰🇳🇴🇸🇪🇫🇮🇮🇸🇫🇴🇬🇱🇦🇽 🌍 It’s been about a month since I volunteered at the Diversity Nordic Summit 2024 hosted by Diversify. Even with a busy October balancing my part-time job and full-time job-seeking, the experience continues to shape my thoughts and work, reminding me why DEI is such a powerful, ongoing journey Volunteering alongside an incredible team from diverse backgrounds was truly inspiring, and I learned so much about applying DEI values in practice. Attending powerful sessions helped me build new perspectives, and revisiting recorded sessions has been a great way to catch up on what I missed. The sessions offered profound insights into the complexities of DEI, addressing critical issues such as societal denial, the balance of inclusion, and the prevention of workplace harassment. Notably, discussions like "Can DEIB Go Too Far?" and "Nordic Denial 3.0" challenged us to confront uncomfortable truths and navigate the fears that can hinder progress. It was especially a pleasure to listen to Dr. Poornima Luthra (She/ Her) and her keynote, "What Are You Afraid Of?" which highlighted her valuable insights on DEI, fear, and allyship, also explored in her books. Overall, the variety of perspectives shared reinforced the necessity of creating supportive environments where every voice is valued. What struck me furthermore was the genuine inclusivity of the summit, with child-friendly spaces and a quiet room for those needing breaks. These thoughtful details ensured that everyone felt welcomed and supported. ✨ Above all, the connections I made are what keep this experience alive for me. Meeting fellow DEI professionals, advocates, and migrants provided invaluable insights and reinforced my commitment to this work. If you’re interested in DEI, I highly recommend joining future initiatives with Diversify and attending the Diversity Nordic Summit t’s truly a transformative experience. Kudos once again to the entire Diversify team—starting with a few names like Chisom Udeze, Miguel Angel Leyva Salas, Nikki Hayes, David Lampshire and all the other inspiring contributors! I made sure to chat with Chisom Udeze because every time I do, I walk away a better person. It’s that simple. After her Diversify Nordics Summit, we sat down and discussed things from the secret sauce of building a viable team to managing both mental health and expectations to building better for the world around us by creating things that we ourselves want. It was a conversation full of meaningful quotables - and I’ll share snippets and shorts on YouTube for those of you with only 60 seconds or so to spare – but if you have an hour to gain a few more perspectives that might improve how you approach work or what you’re building in this world… definitely invest that time in watching Chisom today: https://lnkd.in/dB58R4ab Incidentally, if you’re looking for inspiration or encouragement in building better through your work or in the world around you, you can find additional UPWARD conversations with Emil Novák-Tót, Yesmith Sánchez (she/her), or Uduak Amimo (who, in fact, recently interviewed Chisom herself in her Fearless podcast series) from the playlist that's shared in the comments below. In any case, this is your regular reminder that we can always do better… and I look forward to hearing and celebrating what YOU are building and bringing into this world, as well. #Leadership #DEI #DiversityAndInclusion #MentalHealthAwareness #TeamBuilding #Inspiration #WorkplaceWellbeing #BuildingBetter #EmpathyAtWork #PersonalGrowth #UPWARDConversations
