I enjoyed speaking at the cruise track of last week’s Greenport Conference in Le Havre. I shared how the Port of Bergen and 37 other North Atlantic cruise ports collaborate to cut emissions from cruise ships using the Environmental Port Index (EPI). It is interesting to see how ship emission performance differs from port to port, revealing the impact of local policy, incentive systems, and shore power availability. It is also interesting to observe that the ships show good performance regarding reducing sulphur emissions, with an average of 40% reduction in 2024 compared with IMO emission requirements. A few highlights from the other speakers: MedCruise survey: Valeria Mangiarotti and Jamil Ouazzani shared findings that 88% of Mediterranean ports conduct environmental monitoring, and 94% aim to offer OPS by 2030—demonstrating a solid commitment to sustainability. Port of Malta: Norbert Grech highlighted their OPS capacity, which can support up to five cruise liners with over 70 MVA. An impressive capacity indeed, leaving Port of Bergen’s 48 MVA capacity “in the dust” 😊. Piraeus Port: Chrysanthi Kontogiorgi showcased a digital dashboard providing real-time air quality and weather data for comprehensive monitoring. There is a lot to learn from their setup. Port of Antwerp-Bruges: Tim Verhoeven underscored the need for transparency concerning ship performance data. EPI data can confirm his suspicion concerning overestimation in the 4th IMO GHG study concerning ships' auxiliary engines. EPI data shows that IMO estimates can be 10-50% higher than actual data, rendering them useless for, e.g., shore power capacity planning. It was great to connect with others committed to sustainable progress in the cruise sector! #greenport #cruise

Takk for besøket 😘 Thank you for the visit, Governor Janet Mills. We appreciate your visit, and welcome back to Bergen and Norway. Announcing the Onshore Power Supply Data Set Shore power is vital for ports globally, but knowing which ships are equipped and where connection points are located is challenging. Through a collaborative effort with Port of Bergen and Plug AS, EPI has launched the Shore Power Data Set to streamline access to such data. Our first edition of the database contains cruise ships only, but the model is general to accommodate all vessel types. The data set is by no means complete yet. We invite you to contribute by adding or updating ship data. The success of this initiative depends on community participation. We are proud to be the first port in Britain to join the Environmental Port Index (EPI) 🛳️ Using tools provided by EPI, we’ll be able to monitor marine traffic giving us more data on how the cruise industry impacts our islands. With every decision we make, we aim to ensure sustainability and benchmarking vessels with data from EPI will support us in doing this. When it comes to sustainability, we've already made some big changes. We are implementing a new booking policy, helping us identify the best berth for a given vessel and improve the cruise experience for everyone, visitors and locals alike. This is a positive step forward for our cruise sector and we can't wait to see how our relationship with EPI develops. #orkney #sustainability #cruise #environment 📸 Nathan Milne
