In this month's Aquaculture Intelligence with The Fish Site, we talked about Blue Carbon! From our ongoing work in the blue carbon space, we are encountering several key challenges that have persisted over the years. Key Challenges: 💸 Blue Carbon Credits: the cost of blue carbon credits not fully covering restoration efforts, 📉 Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV): uncertainty remains for seaweed and seagrass projects. 🌿 Restoration Success Rates: low success rates in certain ecosystems hinder progress. Opportunities for Innovation: 🔬 Advanced Technologies: utilize sophisticated hyperspectral imaging and improved planting techniques. 🌊 Integration with Community Activities: co-locate blue carbon projects with aquaculture and ecotourism. Addressing these challenges while capitalizing on opportunities for innovation and support is essential for unlocking the full potential of blue carbon initiatives. Written by our project manager - Peter Green. And supported by our senior editor Rob Fletcher (And....do connect with Peter Green in New Zealand in October for the Kelp Climate Tour)

🌊Hatch Innovation Services is thrilled to announce our successful collaboration with The Nature Conservancy on Seaweed Aquaculture Policy Gap Analysis! 🌱Sustainable seaweed aquaculture requires regulatory standards to avoid adverse environmental and industry outcomes. Enabling policies such as adopting best management practices, funding or loan programs, and permitting transparency are essential to harmonise economic development, environmental preservation, social responsibility, and resiliency in emerging industries. Through this collaboration, we've meticulously mapped out critical policy gaps in seaweed farming across Indonesia, Tanzania, and Kenya 🌱🌍 This project will inform the development of guidance documents intended to provide recommendations for establishing robust national mariculture governance frameworks that improve the environmental and social effectiveness of seaweed aquaculture policies and regulations and mainstream seaweed products in national blue economy strategies. Congratulations to the Hatch Innovation Services team (Karlotta Rieve, Inken Tiedemann, Sakinah Lisa), all the subject matter experts from each country, and The Nature Conservancy team for their work on this important project! Stay tuned for more updates! Hatch Blue, Tanja Knabenschuh Hoel, Gonçalo Abreu Santos

🌊 Did you know that although more than 12,000 species of seaweed have been described, only a tiny fraction—0.1%—are commercially farmed today? 🧐 Seaweed has vast potential for sustainability, nutrition, and industry, yet its farming remains largely untapped. At Hatch Blue, we're passionate about unlocking this potential. In 2022, our consulting unit, Hatch Innovation Services, launched a groundbreaking global seaweed open platform (seaweedinsights.com) led by Karlotta Rieve. This resource provides insights into production, supply chains, and farming techniques across the most dominant seaweed-producing regions. 🌍 But what's the big news? We're thrilled to announce exciting updates: 🌱Updated regional insights: Our platform will soon feature the latest data and insights on seaweed production from new regions - Alaska and the UK! New species: We're expanding our platform to include oyster farming, one of the important regenerative aquaculture species🦪And this project is a collaboration between our business units, Hatch Innovation Services and The Fish Site. Our goal is to foster a thriving and sustainable aquaculture industry by equipping entrepreneurs, investors, academia, and governments with unique, ground-level insights that are difficult to find elsewhere. We’re confident these updates will be a significant asset to all!
