In economic terms the net pen salmon farming sector has been the envy of the rest of the aquaculture industry for at least a decade. But there are signs that – despite the vast profits and huge levels of investment into ways to improve productivity – it might require a fundamental rethink. As the latest Rabobank report highlights, low growth rates and high levels of downgrades in Norway during the first half of the year are indicative of the ever-more challenging growing conditions in coastal waters. While there are no shortage of innovations coming through that will hopefully help conventional farmers, there are also indications that land-based flow-through farms, unlike RAS, are on the cusp of offering a viable – and perhaps more profitable – alternative.

European mussel production has dropped from over 600,000 tonnes in the 1990s to 431,000 tonnes by 2022, increasing reliance on imports. 📉🌍 Diseases, lack of mussel seed, low profitability, and environmental challenges are major contributors to this decline. 🌡️🐚 Hatch Innovation Services highlighted areas for improvement, such as coastal protection and wastewater management. Innovations in genetic improvements, farming technology, and new mussel-derived products could also revitalise the industry. 💡♻️ Mussel shells can be used for calcium carbonate extraction, building materials, and various industrial applications, creating new revenue streams. 🏗️🌱 Non-marketable mussel meat can be used in nutraceuticals, animal feed, pet food, and value-added foods, reducing waste and boosting profitability. 🍲🐾 Read the full article by Niclas Riecken here: https://lnkd.in/d_t3MKMN #lowtrophic #aquaculture #mussel #musselfarming #spat #climatechange

The global salmon sector faces challenges with high mortality and lower superior grade fish due to diseases and environmental factors in Norway and Chile. 🌍🐟 Mechanical sea lice treatments damage salmon, making them more susceptible to diseases like winter ulcers. 🦠❄️ Production grades in Norway have reduced, causing price spikes but lower average farmer incomes. 📉💰 Chile's production suffers from El Nino effects, while Scotland and Canada show signs of recovery. 🇨🇱🇬🇧🇨🇦 Improvements in fishmeal and fish oil supplies could reduce feed prices, helping the shrimp sector. 🦐🌿 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eU2sBhZA #aquaculture #norway #chile #salmon #salmonfarming #fishhealth

Global shrimp production is forecast to reach 5.7 million tonnes in 2024 and 6.1 million in 2025. 🌍🦐 Ecuador’s shrimp production is expected to grow, albeit at a slower rate, while China’s is likely to decrease due to high production costs. 🇪🇨🇨🇳 The impact of US anti-dumping and countervailing duties on shrimp exports from Ecuador and Indonesia remains uncertain but is unlikely to deter exporters. 🇺🇸🛃 Retail shrimp prices remain high, despite lower farm gate prices, with increased costs throughout the supply chain. 📈💲 Technological innovations and better management practices offer hope for improving efficiencies and reducing costs for shrimp farmers. 🤖🌐 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dXsgK_zD #aquaculture #shrimpfarming #seafoodproduction #marketforecast #shrimpindustry

The arrival of industrial scale aquaculture in places as ecologically important as Lake Victoria might not meet with universal approval. But Victory Farms – which has rapidly grown to become Africa’s biggest tilapia company – does appear to be generating significant benefits to both the local human population and the surrounding landscape. One of their most positive new initiatives involves producing tilapia eggs in partnership with local farmers, who can then use the water from these broodstock ponds to grow crops. In the process Victory’s system of “extensive aquaponics” is generating income, improving degraded farmland and helping to provide both fish and vegetables to an area where poverty and malnutrition are rife. GreenSage Prebiotics has developed Pretego, a coconut-based compound that serves as a natural alternative to antibiotics in aquaculture. 🥥🦐 Trials with shrimp have shown improved feed conversion, growth rates and higher survival rates against disease challenges. 📈🐟 Using Pretego may increase feed costs by 3-5%, but the company says that farmers can recoup $10 to $25 for every extra dollar spent due to improved performance. 💰 Pretego has shown promising results in salmon, potentially reducing antibiotic use and enhancing disease resistance. 🐟🌊 GreenSage seeks to scale up production and secure regulatory approvals in multiple countries. 🌍📊 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/drR6Aqa3 #greensage #pretego #aquaculture #salmon #shrimp #diseaseresistance #aquaculturehealth
