Meet Betty Søgård, Nordisk Energiforskning's new Higher Executive Officer! Betty's passion for the Nordic region runs deep. She enjoys working across Nordic languages, which she believes enhances communication and fosters stronger regional connections. Originally from Norway, Betty has spent the past few years studying and working in Denmark. "After almost five years in Copenhagen, first completing my master's thesis on border barriers for Norwegians in Denmark connected to the Nordic Council of Ministers' Vision 2030, and then focusing on integrating youth into the Danish and Nordic labour market, you could say that I am a dedicated Nordist," Betty says. At Nordic Energy Research, Betty will be planning and coordinating events, implementing sustainable perspectives, strengthening the involvement of youth, and incorporating equal rights as an integral part of our work. Iceland aims to be a pioneer in the green energy transition Areas that are isolated or far away from neighbouring shores do not only have a distinct location, but they also face unique energy challenges. However, an island that plays a notable part in advancing green energy initiatives for isolated or distant places is Iceland. Ragnar Ásmundsson, Project Manager, Energy Fund & Energy Projects, at Orkustofnun, is the Icelandic representative of the Net Zero Islands Network. He elaborates on Iceland's plan for becoming carbon neutral and the status on reaching carbon neutrality: "The Government of Iceland's ultimate goal is to become independent from fossil fuels, according to a climate action plan adapted to our national conditions. Through these actions, Iceland aims to be a pioneer in the green transition. An important factor in realising this ambition is an energy transition of the transport sector, which can bring about one of the greatest reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in Iceland." “International research collaboration is crucial for finding the best energy solutions to climate change” These were the words of Birte Holst Joergensen, Senior Researcher, DTU - Technical University of Denmark, when Nordisk Energiforskning held the Annual Mobility Workshop in Oslo last week. By gathering PhD students and researchers from different fields and regions, the workshop provided an excellent space for fostering interdisciplinary connections, sharing knowledge, and exploring the added value of Nordic research collaboration. During the workshop, participants showed great interest in exchanging experiences about their work and in establishing long-term relations and cooperation. Among others, the project leaders of NFSNergy, NordNet 2.0, and EIA gave insight into their respective expertise on fire safety in green energy initiatives, sustainable transport, and energy informatics. Nordic Energy Research would like to thank everyone for taking part in the constructive dialogue, both during the presentations and in the breaks! We look forward to continuing the strengthening and expansion of energy communities across the Nordic countries. The Annual Mobility Workshop is organised under the Nordic Energy Research Mobility Programme. Nordic perspectives in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil This week, Nordisk Energiforskning co-organised two sessions at one of the largest clean energy events of the year – the annual Clean Energy Ministerial and Mission Innovation Ministerial (CEM15/MI-9). During the discussions, it was made clear that the Nordic region can lead by example globally when it comes to sustainable energy cooperation and hydrogen valleys. While our first session addressed how we can coordinate diverse funding streams to support the clean energy transition more effectively, the second explored the most recent developments in materials to advance hydrogen-based energy solutions. Kadri Simson, Commissioner for Energy at the European Commission who opened our event Materials for Energy and Hydrogen, concluded that: “As we discuss the future of clean hydrogen today, we must remember that materials innovation is not just a technical issue—it is a strategic one. By fostering collaboration, investing in research, and scaling up new technologies, we can unlock the full potential of clean hydrogen and drive the global energy transformation that we all aspire to.” We would like to thank all participants for contributing to the discussions and look forward to continuing the dialogue around these crucial topics! Let us introduce: The winners of the Nordic Energy Challenge 2024! For the first time in Nordic Energy Challenge history, we have a shared first place in the winners' stand. Congratulations to Julia Kirch Kirkegaard and Tom Cronin, as well as the KXT Team, led by Rune Kirt! The jury selected both proposals as winners because of the unmistakable potential of them working together, as they supplement each other to a high extent. An excerpt from the jury's motivation reads: "Both proposals embrace the crucial need for engaging citizens in large-scale renewable energy projects. While Julia’s and Tom's planning tool incorporates social parameters for the feasibility assessment of comprehensive energy projects, the KXT Team introduces a tool for simplifying the complexity of renewable energy projects through visualization and digital arts." Given the clear connections between the two winning proposals, the jury encourages the projects to collaborate in the future to maximise each other's competencies. We would also like to congratulate Xiaolei Bian and Changfu Zou on their third place for their idea "ChargeForward: Empowering citizens with AI to enhance battery health and sustainability". Nordisk Energiforskning looks forward to following up on the development of the exciting proposals. Thank you to all applicants for participating in the Nordic Energy Challenge and best of luck in future commitments!
