Meet Xingxing Zhang, Professor in Energy Technology at Högskolan Dalarna, who is through to the next stage in the Nordic Energy Challenge 2024. His idea on this year's theme, Citizen Engagement, is titled "Modular energy toolkit for the participatory development of smart wooden urban furniture". "Wood material and components can be recycled from our daily life. The idea is to co-develop the smart urban wooden furniture, integrated with a module energy toolkit that will enable the possible connection of wooden urban furniture with local energy system for storage and sharing," says Zhang. Great potential for a Nordic position of strength on clean hydrogen Last week Nordisk Energiforskning concluded this year's tour of the Scandinavian democracy festivals with an event at the Norwegian Arendalsuka. Together with panels in each country we have discussed the prospects for a Nordic position of strength on clean hydrogen through the whole value chain and each country's possible contribution. Drawing on the early results from Nordic Energy Research mapping of Nordic hydrogen valleys the participants elaborated on the different potentials and strengths in their respective country. There was widespread support for the idea that the Nordics could collaborate to establish a strong international position. Nordic hydropower, Danish offshore wind power, and Swedish collaborations between industry and academia were some of the unique advantages highlighted. Later this autumn Nordic Energy Research will launch the full report "Mapping Nordic Hydrogen Valleys", mapping hydrogen valleys (substantial cluster of hydrogen value chains). Åland – a small society with high climate ambitions Islands are confronted by barriers to implementing green energy solutions due to their isolated and remote character, but the Åland Islands in the Finnish archipelago have come a long way in their research and technology for being CO2-neutral. Yvonne Österlund, Senior Engineer at the Department of Infrastructure, Government of Åland, is working with the island group's plan to achieve climate neutrality by 2035: "In 2014, we were the leading renewable energy producing region in Finland, but the Development and Sustainabilty Agenda for Åland manifested in 2016 was the trigger for a wider scope of the green energy transition in Åland," says Österlund. The agenda includes seven strategic development goals, with associated sub-goals, roadmaps, and status reports. Österlund hopes to share these initiatives and hear about other islands' solutions through the Net Zero Islands Network, a network funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers to let remote and isolated areas exchange knowledge, increase job opportunities, and investigate CO2-negative possibilities. Hvordan kan Norge støtte en felles nordisk styrkeposisjon innenfor hydrogen? Dette diskuterte vi i går på Arendalsuka. Vårt ekspertpanel gjorde det klart at Norge har en rekke styrkeposisjoner, blant annet på grunn av det store potensialet for blått hydrogen, våre mange pilot prosjekter og den unike tillitskulturen man har mellom forskning, næringsliv og myndigheter i Norge og Norden. ⚡ Edina Ringdal Wickholm, Director Decarbonisation Policy and Partnerships, Yara International, fremhevet Yara's over 100 år lange historie med trygg produksjon, transport, og forbruk av hydrogen og fortrinnsvis ammoniakk. Norge har erfaringen man trenger for å videreutvikle disse verdikjedene, og vil dele dette med verden. 🌊 Fridtjof Unander, Chief Economist, Aker Horizons, påpekte også Norges rolle for en bærekraftig og sikker energiforsyning av Europa. Men oppskalering er nødvendig. Norges største anlegg kan kun understøtte ca. 1/150 av EU's importbehov. ⏩ Nils Røkke, Executive Vice President Sustainability, SINTEF, var enig i at både nordisk og europeisk samarbeid er nødvendig, men at norsk offentlig støtte til miljøvennlig energiforskning er redusert med 13% de siste tre årene og ikke er tilstrekkelig om vi skal nå 2030-målene våre. 🛳 Ada Martine Jakobsen, CEO, NCE Maritime CleanTech, understreket at særlig norske maritime selskaper er verdensledende i å igangsette hydrogenprosjekter, men att klyngene våre trenger finansiell støtte for å videreutvikle hele verdikjeden. 💬 Kevin Johnsen, COO, Nordisk Energiforskning, sammenlignet den norske hydrogendebatten med den svenske. Mens det i Sverige handler mest om å produsere hydrogen til sin egen industri, er det større fokus på eksportmuligheter i Norge. With a Master of Arts in Learning and Innovative Change from Aalborg University, Betty will take on the role as Higher Executive Officer at Nordic Energy Research. Nina holds a Master in Political Communication with a Nordic perspective from Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) and she will work as our Communications Intern this semester.
