The EU has tightened its battery regulations. It has released new guidelines which require manufacturers to use a significantly higher proportion of recycled minerals (such as Cobalt, Lithium etc) in their batteries. This is massive. This is all set to change the landscape of the IoT world. The increase in cost might be tolerable to some but the already tenuous proposition of using battery-powered IoT might just become a tad bit too painful to stick around with for others. Now more than ever, batteryless IoT seems an even more compelling option. Not only do you get to avoid the hassle of compliance and extra $$$ with batteryless, but you also get to sidestep the battery problem altogether - no maintenance, no hatches, no replacements or recycling worries. As we inch closer to 2030, these regulations are only poised to get more stringent. A recent study by Mckinsey showed that today's consumers are willing to go the extra mile to make sure their purchasing decisions are aligned with their environmental concerns. The study showed that consumers were willing to pay upto 10% more for a more environmentally sustainable alternative! Earlier this week, the ENLIGHTENED consortium gathered in Linköping, Sweden for the official project kick-off meeting.
