In January 2025, the FuelEU maritime regulation kicks in. Ships over a certain size visiting EU ports will need to report their fuel’s carbon intensity. Fall short of the target? You’ll need to buy or borrow compliance balances. That’s where Hecla Emissions Management, the Wilhelmsen Ship Management joint venture comes in. They’ve just launched the FuelEU Marketplace – a secure platform to trade compliance balances, aligning with existing contractual frameworks. According to the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), 80% of accidents at sea are caused by human error, either directly or indirectly. By integrating advanced sensors, autonomous vessels enable precise navigation, enhanced maintenance, and stronger safety measures. An onboard officer typically oversees one vessel, but with autonomy, they can oversea five vessels. This allows high-risk and error-prone tasks to be managed more efficiently and safely. Our joint venture Massterly (a Kongsberg Wilhelmsen joint venture) is at the forefront of this shift, operating autonomous vessels that are raising safety standards. Interested to learn more?
