    IP Australia has taken the next step on its journey reviewing the Australian designs system. Just over a year ago, IP Australia asked the public for feedback about the protection of designs and have now released the outcomes.     From 1 October 2024, IP Australia will update their fees to cover the costs of administering IP rights and their associated legislation. The revised fees will impact a range of services and IP-related processes, marking a shift in how global and local businesses and individuals engage with Australia's IP framework.     IP Australia's latest fee changes will take effect on 1 October 2024. Their excess claim fees will remain the same, however significant changes in when these fees are calculated and due to be paid are being implemented.     We recently hosted a series of mock interviews for Aotea College students at our Wellington office. This initiative, organised in partnership with the Graeme Dingle Foundation Wellington, aimed to provide valuable real-world experience to students preparing to enter the job market. The event was met with an enthusiastic response from students who were interviewed by AJ Park staff, Duncan de Geest, Suzi Duffin, Ryan C., Janette by de Ley and Zoe Dewhurst. "We were really impressed by the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students visiting our office. AJ Park recently updated its parental leave policy to provide: - 18 weeks of paid leave plus 8 weeks of top-ups for primary carers - 6 weeks of paid leave for partners - KiwiSaver employer contributions on paid and unpaid parental leave (up to 12 months) - Temporary and permanent flexible working arrangements - Annual leave paid at its full value - Facilities and breaks to feed or express - 10 days of paid leave for primary carers and 2 days of paid leave for partners to attend prenatal/pregnancy-related appointments - 5 days of paid leave for pre-adoption appointments - Up to 5 days of paid leave for appointments relating to fertility treatment - Option to extend unpaid leave by an additional 12 months - Up to 5 days of paid bereavement leave for birthing parents and 3 days paid bereavement leave for partners in the event of a miscarriage - Ability to access full AJ Park-paid parental leave in the event of a stillbirth ------------------ Is your organisation on the Register?     AJ Park Principals Thomas Huthwaite and Natalie Harre are presenting at the 37th IPSANZ Annual Conference, kicking off this Friday 30 August in Queenstown. Thomas is chairing a session on current copyright issues exploring how the courts in AU and NZ might respond to contemporary technological developments such as AI, live streaming and deep faking. Natalie is co-presenting a session on ownership and intent to use challenges for AU and NZ trade marks, considering challenges arising from different complex scenarios.     In our latest article, The executor, the estate, and the exclusive licence, AJ Park expert Blake Carey shares key learnings from the recent JONAH LOMU trade mark saga. In this case, Stylez Ltd (Stylez) successfully sought to invalidate New Zealand trade mark registration 1195732 JONAH LOMU in the name of Nadene Lomu. While the result may seem intuitively unfair to the Jonah Lomu estate, the Assistant Commissioner’s reasoning appears sound.     IPONZ has released new timeframes for examining trade mark applications. The timeframes to examine national applications and international registrations have been pushed out considerably and represent the longest examination periods we have seen for many years.
