Bright pinks, oranges and reds cloak the ground of the new children’s playground at the Botanic Gardens, reflecting the deity of fire Mahuika, and her cheeky moko Māui. This morning, mana whenua from Kāti Huirapa Runaka ki Puketeraki and Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou opened the new children’s playground with a whakawātea. Mana whenua partnered with the Dunedin City Council via Aukaha’s Mana Ahurea team to develop playground designs inspired by the legend of Mahuika and Māui, a well-known narrative that showcases Māui’s playfulness and trickery. Mahuika is the tāua (kuia) of Māui, and she has a special relationship with fauna and species that inhabit both the undergrowth of the forest and the rākau (trees). Kāi Tahu artist Madison Kelly incorporated these narrative aspects into illustrations of plants related to the story as well as insects/creatures that would be found in the Otago region gardens, as well as the bright fiery colour palette on the playground floor. Make sure you check out the new playground these school holidays! Peipei ana kē!

Directed by mana whenua, our Mana Ahurea team has been working with ORC and GHD to integrate mana whenua values and narratives into the design of the new ORC building. We can't wait to see the end result!
A sneak-peek into the new Otago Regional Council Headquarters! In the heart of Dunedin's CBD, a 1990s retail warehouse is being transformed into a modern, multi-use office space for over 300 staff. The vision is to create a space that fosters unity and collaboration, bringing the entire team together under one roof. In collaboration with mana whenua owned organisation Aukaha, the building reflects mana whenua design principles, ensuring the cultural values and stories of mana whenua are woven into every aspect. Tāniko (weaving) manifestations run at the top of the exterior glazing, embodying the land and movement of water that flow through the hills and mountains of the Otago takiwā (region). This design is repeated along the main exterior glazed elements. Underpinning these designs are mana whenua values of kaitiakitaka, mana, rakatirataka, and manaakitaka– all values which express care for our natural environment, leadership that allows many voices, and upholding water and environment quality for future generations. Kāi Tahu artists Ephraim Russell, Kate Stevens West and James York have designed stunning artwork that embody these principles throughout the building’s interior and façade, all brought to life through the architectural vision of our team. The revitalised space will not only reflect the company’s culture but also serve as a testament to its commitment to fostering collaboration and productivity. 🔗 Discover more about the co-design process and get the latest updates on the project in Scoops' latest article: https://lnkd.in/gpPY6hCK

Building on the recent success of Te Rangihīroa, Jasmax is looking forward to the completion of a new accommodation wing and social space connecting to the 1950s Aquinas College at the University of Otago. Alongside a refurbishment of the college’s existing dining and tutorial spaces, the redevelopment includes a transformed welcome experience, new student commons, and 66 bedrooms overlooking an extensively landscaped courtyard, providing an enhanced connection to nature. It’s been a pleasure working with the University of Otago to deliver this project that will connect three separate accommodation buildings to establish a new central heart. Every aspect of the design is focused on enhancing student wellbeing and fostering a socially supportive community. Kāi Tahu artist Madison Kelly is carefully applying her craft to the entrance and courtyard walls in preparation for the official opening of the college extension in the coming weeks.
