Black Friday - Everyone loves it. Few know the true story behind it. The first use of 'Black Friday' referred to the 1869 financial crisis caused by a conspiracy to manipulate the gold market. Yikes. Then in the 1960s, the term emerged again, used by police officers in Philadelphia as they struggled against the tide of suburban tourists flooding into the city for shopping and for the infamous Army-Navy football game. But today, retailers have turned that very same weekend into the most profitable weekend of the year, when their books go from the 'red' into 'black'. And thankfully, the rise of online shopping has taken a bit of the frenzy out of Black Friday - a much better outcome, we'd all agree. Happy shopping!
