Flashback to one of our thought-provoking FM Summit presentations…. Tim Exton, Community Ranger for the Department of Conservation (DOC) shed light on the crucial role facilities managers play in Aotearoa's Predator Free 2050 initiative during an eye-opening presentation. Highlighting what 'Predator Free' means for NZ, Tim gave us insights into the risks posed by trap and bait-shy pests, the potential in creating “super rats," and the new skills required for FM professionals and pest control contractors. He emphasised how crucial it is for facilities managers to effectively control commercial urban predators that infiltrate our built environment by drawing a compelling parallel between historical pest introduction and modern urban environments: “You are my metaphor! Rats arrived here by climbing the anchor ropes of ships as they were moored and worked their way in land from there. You and the built environment are my land-locked ship with the anchor rope still there…so if I can get you guys to start thinking in that way, you will be my bastion of predator-free.” With predators killing an estimated 25 million native birds annually, the FM sector can contribute meaningfully to conservation efforts. Tim's presentation highlighted how we can incorporate ecological considerations into our work, becoming frontline defenders in urban pest control. #FMANZ #FacilitiesManagement #PredatorFree2050 #UrbanConservation

Asking for a pay rise can be a little daunting at the best of times, but a group of FMANZ members recently got some inside intel, arming them with confidence to have those difficult conversations. As part of our FM Summit pre-events, a group of around 30 female members benefitted from a powerful workshop, 'Empowering Women in FM – Negotiating Your FM Career Pathway,' presented by Alexandra Hanlon, CEO and Negotiation Navigator, Fair Pay Negotiations. Alex shared insights and practical tools to prepare for the conversation of asking for a remuneration package increase and career advancement opportunities. Feedback from those who attended is overwhelmingly positive with attendees left feeling empowered and better equipped to advocate for their professional growth. Special thanks to Alex for an inspirational session and to Will Bliss and the team at Colliers NZ for generously hosting the event at the impressive HSBC Tower building, especially Sienna Miyoung Kim who efficiently organised the catering and warmly welcomed our members. #FMANZ #facilitiesmanagent #payrisenegotiations #empowering

Our latest National Series, supported by BTune, successfully launched this week with our first two events in Wellington and Manawatu. Both events were well attended with members eager to learn about ‘Asset Component and Condition Data for Maintenance and Renewal Planning’ from our presenter - Patrick Homan, Associate Director of Asset Management at Victoria University of Wellington. Patrick shared his personal journey in asset and facilities management, highlighting the significance of good asset condition reporting and its role in supporting the organisations we work for. He emphasised the necessity of collecting relevant, scrutinised, and up-to-date data, as well as the importance of having the right team to capture asset conditions. His insights on using a standardised system, which allows all parties clarity on what the condition means and the importance of categorising your assets into ‘critical’, ‘essential’, ‘maintainable’ and ‘non-maintainable’, were particularly valuable. Special thanks to Patrick for his engaging presentation and to Talei Blomfield and Cara Askew from BTune for joining us at both events, where they explained BTune’s innovative approach to energy savings within our estates. And a shout out to Victoria University of Wellington for hosting the Wellington event. With this being the final National Series of the year, don’t miss the opportunity to upskill in this area while networking with peers at one of the remaining events in Bay of Plenty, Auckland, Waikato, Canterbury and Otago.
