  • 🔊 Trampers: Prepare Well for Labour Weekend Adventures! 🙏 As Labour Weekend approaches, many of us are eager to get back on the trails after winter. However, the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is urging trampers to plan their trips thoroughly and be prepared for the unexpected. Labour Weekend can bring unpredictable weather, and various weather warnings are already in place across the country. This is a reminder to trampers: be flexible with your plans and don't hesitate to change them if conditions worsen—your safety is the top priority. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or heading out for the first time in months, ensuring you’re well-prepared is essential. Labour Weekend marks the beginning of the summer tramping season, but that also means dealing with spring conditions—rivers swollen by snowmelt and rain, and potential avalanche risks in alpine areas. MSC’s top 6 tramping tips for Labour Weekend: • Choose the right track for your fitness level – Start small, especially if this is your first tramp after winter. • Take the right gear and check it’s in working order – Ensure your waterproofs, layers, and other essentials are ready to go. • Keep an eye on the forecast and weather warnings – With multiple warnings already issued, it’s crucial to stay updated until the last minute. • Prepare for higher rivers – Spring rains and snowmelt mean river levels can rise fast. Know when it’s unsafe to cross. • Watch for track alerts – Check DOC’s latest alerts for any closures or damage. • Be aware that avalanches can run to the valley floor – Even in spring, avalanches can be a serious threat in alpine areas. If the forecast looks dangerous, don’t hesitate to change your plans. There’s always another day to tramp, but safety must come first. Use the Plan My Walk app to help you find safe, suitable tracks, get real-time weather updates, and stay informed of any track alerts. 🗺️ Start planning your trip with Plan My Walk: https://planmywalk.nz/home Remember, it’s never too late to adjust your plans to stay safe. #MakeItHomeNZ by choosing safety over risk this Labour Weekend. Let’s work together to ensure a safe and enjoyable tramping season. Stay alert, stay prepared, and most importantly, stay safe out there! #LandSearchandRescueNZ #EverywhereForEveryone #Volunteer #SafetyMatters #TrampingNZ #OutdoorSafety #SpringAdventures #MakeItHomeNZ

  • 🔶 Meet the Team: Our Incident Management Team (IMT) Volunteers 🤝 At New Zealand Land Search and Rescue, our Incident Management Team (IMT) volunteers play a crucial role in the success of our operations. These volunteers have extensive backgrounds in search and rescue or emergency management, making them adept at handling high-pressure situations. Their expertise spans logistics, intelligence, public information management, welfare, and safety. While new volunteers typically require significant experience to join the IMT, those who do are highly valued for their planning skills and decision-making abilities. Physical fitness isn't a requirement, but being proficient with computers and interpreting topographical maps is essential. The role also demands the ability to respond to call-outs promptly. IMT volunteers work tirelessly under the instruction of the incident controller, who is normally a police officer, ensuring every operation is planned and executed with precision. Join us in appreciating these behind-the-scenes heroes who ensure our search and rescue missions are well-coordinated and effective.
