We’ve made our biggest delivery yet to Trash 2 Treasure at the Climate Action Campus Ōtautahi: 25 woolsacks of sound insulation and over a tonne of good-quality broadloom carpet. It was quite a challenge getting the truck and trailer up the driveway!   Trash 2 Treasure has been set up to help Christchurch construction and demolition companies give leftover materials a second life in the community. It is open to the public every Thursday from 1pm – 3pm and everything is free. We’ve had some very generous support from Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council - Te Kaunihera o te tai o Aorere and BRANZ to run our Resource Sorter – Construction (Micro-credential) course in Nelson and some spots are free!   The course gives workers the tools they need to reduce construction waste going to landfill by diverting it to be reused/recycled and talks about actions to avoid waste altogether. The time commitment is a morning in the classroom at the Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Centre in Stoke, with dates available from the 30th of September to the 4th of October, then around 40 hours on site. Graduates get all the knowledge they need to become a waste superhero at their company and earn 5 credits at Level 2 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF).   Free places are available for one worker per company, first in first served. It has been a week of firsts at our Acute Adult Mental Health Facility site at the Waikato Hospital campus - we had our first crane lift to install a 16-tonne manhole and poured our first batch of concrete as the dark clouds gathered overhead. Tonkin + Taylor and Naylor Love, in collaboration with the Youth Hub Christchurch project, have been conducting a trial to better understand the quantity and make up of timber waste generated by the construction industry. Over the past twelve months, we’ve embarked on a detailed journey to quantify and analyse the composition of timber waste, conducting four rigorous physical sorting sessions of 2 x 9m³ skips and gathering 70 visual survey data entries.   This comprehensive BRANZ timber study is now complete, marking a significant milestone in our collaborative efforts to drive sustainability in construction. To mark the occasion, the team took a well-deserved break to enjoy a hearty BBQ.   The team at the Youth Hub project did a superb job of capturing all the data on-site, and we all had a blast getting sweaty and dirty during the physical sort and weighs! A special shout out to WasteCo NZ Ltd for providing the much-needed space, staff, and a forklift + driver during our sort and weigh sessions at their facility.   As Tonkin + Taylor compiles the data collected during this research, we’re excited about the insights it will bring to the industry. #wasteshakedown

We're working both inside and outside at the Wellington Town Hall, with the façade refurbishment progressing apace. This involves strengthening the parapets, installing internal gutter overflows and aluminium flashings, and reinstating the fibreglass moldings. We've been carefully preserving the heritage characteristics of the façade, refurbishing the timber window frames, repairing and repainting the rendered plaster, and reinstating the bluestone at the base of the columns. Old meets new with the cast iron grills - we restore and reinstate them where we can, and install laser cut replicas if the originals can't be reused. Wellington City Council

We’re enthusiastic about sharing the fantastic work our teams are doing with the rest of the industry. This recent National Association of Women in Construction NZ (NAWIC) site visit to the Wellington Town Hall was a great chance to explore the lessons learned in base isolation and seismic strengthening of a Category 1 Heritage listed building. Smiles all round!
