About us

Everything we do helps to build better communities across New Zealand. This attitude is shared and understood across Hawkins and our parent company, Downer. In other words, we share the same values and we share the same ethos. We're proud of our desire to build better communities and we think Fred Hawkins, who started the company back in 1947, would be proud of it too. At Auckland Airport, International Women’s Day isn’t just about celebration, it’s about action. On Monday, we brought together the wāhine (and some of our male allies) of AKL for an event focused on career growth, networking, and mentorship. Research shows that strong professional networks are key to career success, yet women often face barriers in building them. That’s why we provided speed mentoring and networking opportunities alongside insights from inspiring guest speakers.  “The event left me feeling empowered and reminded me of how supportive our airport community is. I think it’s important to create a space outside of our day-to-day roles to connect with other incredible women, share experiences and think about where we might want to take our careers.” - Kristina Jeffery, Commercial Performance Business Partner "This event was an opportunity to reflect on our careers and share experiences with other women in the organisation. It was inspiring to discover common challenges and recognise the strength in supporting one another”. - Colinda Rowe, Waste Minimisation Manager. Our commitment to gender equity goes beyond IWD, including: → Wāhine Toa Career Mentorship Programme – accelerating female talent into leadership at AKL → Parental leave enhancements – 18 weeks full pay for primary carers, 6 weeks for partners → Menopause support – a new toolkit and awareness initiatives → Period equity – free products in all staff bathrooms in partnership with Dignity NZ Period Care. While we’re proud of our 50% female board and executive representation, we’re pushing further to ensure 40:40:20 gender balance across all leadership tiers. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate, learn, and support each other. #IWD2025 #WāhineToa #Leadership #GenderEquity #WeAreAucklandAirport

From Classroom to Construction Site! While school was out, these students were getting hands-on experience. Over the summer, we welcomed 12 students across our Hawkins Auckland projects, giving them a taste of the construction industry. Through our partnerships with Ara Auckland Airport Jobs & Skills Hub, the Northern Jobs and Skills Hub, and employing from the local community, these students shadowed our teams, gaining valuable skills and industry insights. They rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in alongside our teams and subcontractors working on our projects at Auckland Airport, Radiology Middlemore Hospital, Waitakere Hospital and Site 6. Craig Treloar, Hawkins EGM shared, “It’s been great having students onsite over the summer. I’ve heard from the team, that they’ve shown great initiative, worked hard, and demonstrated a real willingness to learn.” Some students are now returning to school, while others are considering a future in construction—and we’re excited to help shape their journeys. Our Hawkins team are passionate about growing young talent and creating pathways into the construction industry. #Hawkins #BuiltByHawkins #SummerInterns #Construction #Infrastructure #FutureinConstruction #BuildingFutureLeaders

Final Touches at Site 6! Last week, our Hawkins team gathered for a special blessing ceremony at the Site 6 building – marking the first step in handing over to Precinct Properties tenant Beca. Just five months ago, we completed the structure for all three Site 6 buildings. Now, with the fit-out across all five levels taking shape, the space is looking exceptional.   As we approach the final stages, we’re proud to see this project come to life.   Craig Treloar, Hawkins EGM shares: "Congratulations to the team for their outstanding work on the construction of Site 6. Special mention to Precinct Properties for choosing Hawkins as your partner to deliver another exciting piece of the development in Wynyard Quarter!”.   A huge thank you to our teams and partners and subcontractors for their dedication in transforming this space. We are looking forward to completion in April 2025!

Auckland Airport and construction partner Hawkins recently invited the young creative minds of Jean Batten School and Mountain View School to help name our newest crane. As part of the Domestic Jet Terminal development, this will stand tall on our precinct for the next five years. After reviewing hundreds of inspired entries, we’re thrilled to announce the winner: “Harriet Can Carry It”, submitted by Rochelle, age 8, from Mountain View School. The crane went up recently with the new name resplendent on the cab, courtesy of Smith Crane & Construction Ltd    Rochelle's winning entry earned her a $300 Prezzy Card, a miniature model crane, and $1,000 for her school, along with a celebratory class BBQ.  Our runner-up, Lola (also age 8, from Mountain View School), impressed us with her entry, “Lifty”, taking home a $200 Prezzy Card and a miniature crane model. Five merit awards of $100 Prezzy Cards, went to standout entries from Jean Batten School students with their prizes kindly sponsored by our subcontractor partners Complete Reinforcing, Live Firm Group Limited, Henderson Demolition, Vuksich & Borich(NZ) Limited, and REVEX PILING.  Special thanks to all the wonderful students who participated— you gave our judges a really tough task and your creativity and enthusiasm truly lifted this project to new heights!

AKL’s new domestic jet terminal is going up! Structural columns are now being lifted into place – 92 in the first phase of the build – as the terminal’s main building starts to take shape. This will create the support structure for the domestic terminal headhouse – the engine room of the new domestic jet terminal.  Right at the heart of the new terminal, the headhouse will contain the domestic arrivals and baggage pick-up area, traveller amenities, operational management spaces, airline lounges and dwell spaces, plus a new state of the art baggage system. If you’re coming out to Auckland Airport first thing in the morning you might catch a glimpse as the columns are individually trucked in from the west Auckland fabrication workshop of D&H Steel Construction. 🏗️ up to 12 tonnes  📏 standing up to 21m tall  🔩 190 columns across the new terminal It’s not just about supporting a new terminal.  By the end of 2027 we expect around 2,500 people will be working onsite at AKL, but a project of this scale creates a ripple effect right across the construction industry, supporting hundreds more jobs and businesses and providing a steady, secure pipeline of work. That’s great news for Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and beyond. Read more about this milestone moment: https://lnkd.in/gUZXCqtR And if you’re keen to join the team at AKL as we deliver a new domestic jet terminal, we’re looking for infrastructure project directors, senior infrastructure project managers, infrastructure project managers, construction operations managers, infrastructure procurement specialists, infrastructure commercial managers and infrastructure programme cost managers. https://lnkd.in/gsNvZVEH  Carrie Hurihanganui | Susana Fueyo Suarez | Mary-Elizabeth Tuck | Tim McKenzie | Isaac Taylor | Angela Ashworth MRICS | Ray Blumrick | Gavin Buchanan | Ruby Blucher | Stuart Gibbs Steven Crook | Christian Messelyn, MInstD | Jason Dardis | Jane Winterman | Leah Marren | Shanon Tapp | Libby Middlebrook | Clodagh O’Connor-McKenna | Richard Hine | Sam Wells D&H Steel Construction ltd | Hawkins

Exciting developments are underway at the Kenepuru Science Centre project, where ESR – Science and Research has partnered with CID to deliver cutting-edge facilities. The first batch of structural steel has arrived and is now being installed on site by Hawkins. This new facility is a two-storey building with highly efficient floor plates for PC2 laboratory and workplace functions. Look forward to more updates as additional steel is set to be installed in the coming months, paving the way for concrete floor slabs to be poured. WARREN AND MAHONEY #infrastructure
