State of Science webinar - NZAGRC x Teagasc: The challenge of managing soil carbon on agricultural peatlands. A surprisingly high share of New Zealand's carbon dioxide emissions comes from a tiny proportion of soil - peat bogs that have been drained to support productive agriculture. Join us as speakers Louis Schipper - The University of Waikato and Prof Dr. Owen Fenton - Teagasc discuss the latest research surrounding peatlands and greenhouse gases. When: Tuesday 10th December 2024, 10.00am – 11.00am NZT via Zoom (Monday 9th September 2024, 9.00pm - 9.30 pm IST) Make sure to register via the link below: https://lnkd.in/gjZsJQnf Want to keep up to date with all of NZAGRC events, opt into our mailing list here: https://lnkd.in/gkqer8Wd

That’s a wrap for day 2 of #NZACCC24! Naomi Parker and Chris Koroheke, New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre closed out the conference after a collaborative session for speakers and attendees to discuss the pathway to 2050, and explore what a low emissions future could look like. A BIG thank you to all our amazing speakers, session chairs and attendees, along with our conference partners AgriZeroNZ and Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). It has been an insightful and thought provoking event, discussing all things at the heart of agriculture and climate change. #NZACCC24 #NZAGRC #AgriZero #MPI #ClimateChange #Agriculture #Tākina

“Farmers that chase for efficiency drive their profit up. It’s a win-win. A win for the economy and for the environment.” – George Moss Our last two panel sessions explored the opportunities for on-farm adoption. Cynthia Lawrence, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, presented on Cool Sheep, an industry/government programme that aims to give every sheep farmer in New Zealand the opportunity to use genetic selection to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our national flock. We then heard from three incredibly passionate farmers George Moss, Emma Crutchley and Ken Goldsmith about the important mahi they are doing on their farms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A key message was that seemly small changes made across a farm system can add up to big emission reductions, without compromising profit. Also, proposed new solutions need to make economic sense or they will sit on the shelf. We need to “walk towards those problems that won’t go away” together. Many farmers are taking action now, but they can’t do this alone. Working collectively is how the NZ agricultural sector will thrive for the future. Our panel “Activating mitigation: Insights into the challenges of adoption” discussed the barriers to adoption and how we can accelerate on-farm uptake of emissions reduction technologies in New Zealand. The panellists echoed many of the themes brought up by the earlier farmer panel. That by increasing on-farm efficiency, very real emission reductions could be realised now. Plus, that farmers should be at the centre of extension/adoption discussions and that there should be support for farmer-led change. Erica van Reenen concluded the session by reminding us that some change is better than none, and that even when we have a suite of tools available, there will still be barriers to adoption. There is an increasing number of farmers that are keen to be a part of the solution. “Our job is to enable these leading farmers to do that. By working with the willing, and eating the elephant one bite at a time, we will make progress.” #NZACCC24 #NZAGRC #AgriZero #MPI #ClimateChange #Agriculture #Tākina AgriZeroNZ, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI)
