We are looking forward to our upcoming guest lecture on 26 July with Professor Ngaire Woods from Oxford University. Join us in person or online to hear Professor Woods present on 'Government strategy in a world of economic nationalists'. New Zealanders are highly dependent on flourishing trade relations with other countries, including the US and China. But in both these large markets, and in the EU, the rules of engagement and trade with other countries are being upturned. No country will be left unaffected. Professor Ngaire Woods will examine the impact of geostrategic rivalry and contemporary economic strains on the rules-based-order as we know it with its open markets, competitive supply chains, and foreign direct investment. For smaller economies the likely losers will be governments who have lost the capacity to consider industrial policy and whose economic policy decisions are made entirely independently of their foreign and security policies. “Economic security” is now the paradigm in which small countries must operate. They will have to upskill and define what “economic security” means in a world of economic nationalists. When: Friday, 26 July 2024 11:00am - 12:30pm NZDT Where: The Treasury - Level 3, 1 The Terrace, Wellington, or online For virtual attendance, please register via the following link: https://lnkd.in/eKZAxKHV To attend in person, please register via the following link: https://lnkd.in/eRg4QNja

A paper published by the Treasury this week provides new economic analysis on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in New Zealand: https://lnkd.in/gnphwK8m The paper finds that New Zealand, as a higher-skilled, advanced economy, may be more exposed to the impacts of AI, and our traditionally slow diffusion of new technology and low levels of investment in intangible capital could be a barrier to realising AI’s benefits. The authors suggest a focus on skills and alignment of regulation with other countries will both be important to support AI's diffusion.

Check out the Treasury's own Peter Rowe from New Zealand Export Credit (NZEC) in this video from ASB Bank, talking about how a partnership between NZEC and ASB has led to Kiwi Crunch, a family-owned orchard in Hawke's Bay, being able to export more apples to more countries. "Partnering with regional businesses like Kiwi Crunch is awesome because we're enabling them to achieve their global aspirations and seeing what that means to the teams, it's just such a great feeling," Peter says. New Zealand Export Credit (NZEC) is a unit within the Treasury who support New Zealand exports and the internationalisation of New Zealand companies by providing trade credit insurance and financial guarantees that cover a range of political and commercial risks associated with doing international business.
