We are proud to celebrate our Head of Asset Allocation, Charles Hyde's 10-year anniversary with the NZ Super Fund. Over the last ten years, Charles has made substantial contributions that have influenced our investment strategies and improved the overall performance of the NZ Super Fund. Charles joined us from the equities asset management industry with a keen interest in exploring new asset classes. Reflecting on his journey, Charles says, "The chance to explore new asset classes was incredibly appealing." He quickly made his mark with one of his most notable achievements being the introduction of a factor-based equity strategy, which has become one of our largest active allocations and has delivered strong performance. He has also overseen the development of a suite of internal tools and reports that have significantly improved our total portfolio approach, leading to more insightful and productive portfolio management discussions. "These tools have already made a big difference in how we manage our portfolio," Charles notes. Charles's leadership has been instrumental in fostering a pragmatic and open-minded approach within the Guardians, with his ability to balance top-down and bottom-up investing activities a key factor in our successes. "I enjoy refining our investment framework and staying close to our investing activities," he says. Outside of work, Charles enjoys riding motorcycles and is planning a tour of the South Island on his Indian Scout this May. Please join us in congratulating Charles on his achievements!

Our Business Development Director Giacomo Caleffi and Commercial Director Matt Gill had the opportunity to present at the New Zealand Parliament's Transport and Infrastructure Select Committee on our submission to the Offshore Renewable Energy Bill. We’re pleased to support the Bill and commend the Government and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for their proactive approach in developing a pragmatic permitting framework to enable the growth of offshore renewable energy in New Zealand. At the submission today, Giacomo and Matt highlighted several key recommendations to strengthen the Bill and support its intent to create a clear and effective regulatory pathway for investment in offshore renewable energy. 𝗘𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 – We recommend provisions to allow offshore wind projects to be delivered in phases. This approach enables developers to optimise investment and manage costs while delivering efficient outcomes for New Zealand. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 – We suggest clearer guidance to incentivise responsible and prudent development, allow developers to negotiate application overlaps efficiently, and clarify how overlaps with non-offshore renewable energy permit holders will be handled. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗽 – We support a permitting approach that consolidates requirements and minimises duplication with other regulatory regimes. 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 – We recommend that robust decision-making processes are embedded in the Bill, in relation to appeal and non-compliance, with revocation of permits treated as a last resort. We believe these amendments, alongside other equally important ones that we articulated in our submission, will help unlock the level of investment needed to develop New Zealand’s offshore wind potential and support the country’s energy transition. The IABC (International Association of Business Communicators)'s latest write-up features our intranet refresh project, for which we were honoured to receive a Gold Quill Award in Internal Communication. We share how human-centred design helped us create an intranet that would become a central place for information, news and access to key systems here at the Guardians.

Join us in celebrating Mikaila Harris’ five years with the Guardians! 🎉 Starting with us in 2020 as a Tax Advisor, Mikaila says the Guardians’ reputation within the tax community, and leadership in sustainable investment and financial reporting, attracted her to the team. In 2022, Mikaila was promoted to Senior Tax Advisor. She now manages our worldwide tax compliance, tax reporting and relationship with Inland Revenue, alongside other cross-team projects. During her tenure, Mikaila has not only become a Chartered Accountant (congratulations Mikaila!) but has also mentored interns, secondees, and junior staff, sharing her passion for attracting young people into careers in tax while developing her leadership skills. She also completed the Oxfam Trailwalker 50km challenge with a team of colleagues in 2023, making great friends along the way. Mikaila enjoys the technical complexity of her work, considering over 80% of the Fund is invested offshore, as well as the opportunities to get involved and work with people across our organisation. She also appreciates her supportive, fun team. “I’ve been lucky to have leaders who actively seek out opportunities for me to grow and be challenged,” she says. Mikaila says the Guardians’ purpose is an important part of her work, underpinned by a set of values that she sees being truly lived by the team every day. Congratulations again, Mikaila, on five fantastic years with the Guardians!
