A fabulous new initiative to help reduce waste and contribute to creating New Zealand's Circular Economy. Well done to all parties involved in getting this momentous project over the line and into the public arena ♻

Free tyre collections kick off across Aotearoa New Zealand from today, September 1! This means you can rest assured your tyres will be properly managed at their end of life, rather than go to landfill, be stockpiled, or illegally dumped, says Adele Rose, CE of Tyrewise Scheme Manager 3R Group.  “New Zealand doesn’t have a great record on recovering and recycling tyres. Of the 6.5 million which reach the end of their life each year, only about 40% are being recycled – that will change with Tyrewise,” she says.  Tyrewise has a target of 80% of tyres recovered, for recycling or use in a new product, by its fourth year, and over 90% by its sixth year 🥳🥳🥳

Driving development towards a Circular Economy

The new Lids and Caps Collection Scheme officially kicked off today with a launch event at New World Birkenhead — a good volume of lids and caps was already pouring in from those attending the event! 🎉 This initiative is crucial in filling a significant gap in our recycling efforts. Since the standardisation of kerbside recycling in February, lids and caps can no longer be added to kerbside recycling bins. However, thanks to this industry-led scheme, we can now capture this valuable material for recycling. A big shoutout to all those involved in making this happen! 🌏♻️ Kelly Buchanan-Johns Rob Langford Lyn Mayes Rachel Barker Sandy Botterill Debra Goulding #Sustainability #Recycling #CircularEconomy #PlasticsNewZealand #EnvironmentalImpact #CommunityAction

Thanks to Plastics NZ’s ‘CircularConnect’ programme, we got to work with two great teams at Flo & Frankie and Advanced Textiles Association. Some of the composite plastic waste streams from advanced textiles companies are difficult (or even impossible) to recycle - so we provided our client, Duncan's Canvas, with a template to create plastics collection bag for F&F to collect their soft plastics in. At F&F, soft plastics are sorted as they go (thanks to Environmental Innovation Centre workshops and our signage) and then taken to PACT Recycling (using reverse logistics as the F&F van goes past the door once a week anyway). We spoke to Astron to ensure that the new reusable bag comes back to F&F every time. The F&F team are testing the design for us, and we will continue to improve it and determine how many times it can be reused but they are super tough so hopefully for many years. Perhaps a future market for the ATA NZ too ? So reusing waste from textiles to create bags to carry recyclable plastics for another company was a very happy solution! #Sustainability #EnvironmentalInnovationCentre #PlasticRecycling #EIC

So excited to see the launch of the Caps & Lids stewardship scheme today by The Packaging Forum. This provides a pathway for the plastic and metal caps and lids that are no longer allowed in kerbside collections. A huge congrats to our members Pharmapac NZ, Wadding Solutions, Fonterra and Foodstuffs who are founding partners of the scheme, and Pact Group Holdings Ltd who are a key recycling partner.

One of my members found plastic pellets on the beach in the Coromandel. This is not unusual and something that happens to me frequently. It quite frankly breaks my heart every time💔 We know that some of these pellets likely came from the Rena sinking. We also know that some are likely to have come from overseas. However, we also know that there are plastics and distribution companies in Aotearoa who do not have the right mitigation measures in place to prevent pellet loss. Huge congratulations to AVID and our other Operation Clean Sweep compliant industry members who have put their houses in order. For the rest of you ..... there is ZERO excuse for leaking raw materials into the environment 😡 😠 👿 As an industry we have both the knowledge and tools to prevent this. Plastics New Zealand is ready and waiting for you to come on board with Operation Clean Sweep. Contact us now at info@plastics.org.nz!

Director / Partner - AVID | Leading Manufacturer of Plastic Products & Packaging

Spent the weekend in one of our favourite spots on the Coromandel. It was a shame to see these resin pellets washed up on the beach. For those who might not know, these little pellets are the raw materials we convert into new products. I really do hope these haven't come from a New Zealand manufacturing business. We take pellet loss very seriously, operating under the Operation Clean Sweep® certification. Operation Clean Sweep®(OCS) is an international program designed to prevent resin pellet, flake, and powder loss, ensuring they stay out of the marine environment. Plastics New Zealand actively promotes this program - but every business in our industry must hold themselves accountable regardless of whether they are accredited as OCS compliant, or not. In my opinion, if you are operating in our industry and aren't OCS accredited, you shouldn't be allowed to operate, full stop. We already face enough criticism in the media... but that's a rant for another day. p.s. I welcome anyone to visit AVID and see our operations firsthand. We take great pride in our work, you'll be impressed!
