Straterra CE Josie Vidal attended the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Sydney last week. A small but impactful New Zealand delegation led by Resources Minister Shane Jones spoke about opportunities in New Zealand, along with Kerrin C. and Kylie Smeaton from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Business Finland members met with the New Zealanders for a "speed dating" style meet and greet - amazing what you can share in a short space of time. It's great to see New Zealand mining back on the world stage. With 9,000 attendees, the conference had many high profile speakers and panel discussions and there was a strong emphasis on mining's role in a sustainable future, particularly renewable energy. CSIRO launched its Australian attitudes toward mining 2024 survey report which is a fascinating read. Public trust and acceptance of mining have improved over time but engaging with communities, ensuring the fair distribution of benefits, and maintaining transparency are vital to continuing that. Josie met with Minerals Council of Australia CE Tania Constable to talk about shared areas of interest. And of course there was the massive exhibition and lots of tech and machinery to look at including the Epiroc Scooptram ST18SG fully battery electric loader. It's a lot bigger than a Tesla.
