NZ Herald Premium | Wellington’s port is installing what is being billed as New Zealand’s first private commercial 5G network, which will be built by iwi-owned Tū Ātea Network Services Ltd. Wi-Fi has been the traditional go-to for an organisation’s inhouse network, or a temporary network for an event. But punting for the same 5G technology that One New Zealand, Spark New Zealand and 2degrees use on their public mobile networks, but in a closed environment, has several performance advantages. Tū Ātea will use radio spectrum allocated to it by the Crown in 2022 and kit from Mavenir — an American telecommunications firm focused on 5G equipment that uses open software. Tū Ātea inked a partnership with Mavenir in November last year. “CentrePort Ltd began investigating ways to provide better coverage across the port roughly two years ago,” chief executive Anthony Delaney told the Herald. 🔗 Get Chris Keall's full report: https://lnkd.in/gM-DZ7N6

Tū Ātea yesterday signed a partnership with Wellington's CentrePort Ltd to deliver our state-of-the-art 5G Stand-Alone network service across the port's facilities in 2025. Drawing on our next-generation spectrum, the 5G private network, the first commercial deployment of its kind in New Zealand to date, will allow CentrePort to progress its innovation programme as a critical link in Aotearoa's freight and logistics supply chain. CentrePort Chief Executive Anthony Delaney said the investment in a private 5G network enables enhanced and reliable connectivity across the port, which will further improve efficiency and productivity. This will ensure customers’ goods efficiently get to where they’re intended, but more importantly, will enable opportunities to improve the safety of CentrePort's people. The network is expected to include several 5G cell sites mounted onto existing light poles to provide dedicated transmission coverage across the port’s operations. The network will be up and running in 2025 after a final design is confirmed and network equipment is installed. The partnership with CentrePort caps off a busy year for Tū Ātea, which included full integration of Tū Ātea Network Services Ltd (formerly The Broadtech Group), which we acquired in 2023, and a new partnership with Mavenir to deliver 4G and 5G small cell private networks and infrastructure-sharing across Aotearoa. With more exciting and innovative projects in the pipeline, 2025 is shaping up to be an important year for Tū Ātea in its mission to provide world-class communication services to New Zealand communities and businesses while delivering economic, cultural, environmental and social benefits to Māori.

CentrePort Ltd is taking another strong step forward in its efforts to continuously improve what it offers its people and customers as a critical link in the freight and logistics supply chain. Yesterday, it confirmed it will establish a private 5G network across the port in partnership with Tū Ātea, the Maori Spectrum and Telecommunications Services, concentrating initially on its container terminal. In signing the contract, CentrePort Chief Executive Anthony Delaney said the investment in a 5G network is significant as it enables enhanced and reliable connectivity opportunities to further improve efficiency and productivity. This will ensure customers’ goods efficiently get to where they’re intended, but more importantly, will enable opportunities to improve the safety of our people. 👷♀️ 👷♂️ Tū Ātea Chief Executive Antony Royal agreed saying it offered a tremendous opportunity for the port, and others in business, who could learn from CentrePort’s initiative. He also indicated this was history in the making as it is believed to be the first commercial private 5G network for New Zealand. While the ink may be dry on the agreement between the two partners, CentrePort’s Anthony said that the first step was to confirm the design of the network. The network is expected to include several 5G cell sites mounted onto existing light poles to provide dedicated transmission coverage across the port’s operations. 📶   A key advantage of the dedicated 5G network is its ability to quickly and reliably connect CentrePort’s people and systems, while ensuring disruption is minimised by mitigating the effects of other users. CentrePort expects the network will be up and running in 2025 after a final design is confirmed and network equipment installed.
