TYLA Youth Development Trust
Non-profit Organizations
Empowering disadvantaged and at-risk young people to make positive choices and turn their lives around.
About us
Since 1996, The TYLA Youth Development Trust (TYLA) has been empowering disadvantaged, vulnerable, and at-risk tamariki (children) and rangatahi to make positive choices – and turn their lives around. In partnership with New Zealand Police, Oranga Tamariki we identify rangatahi displaying risk factors that indicate they are likely to offend in the future. Operating in South and Central West Auckland, with spaces in Ōtara and Avondale, TYLA delivers early intervention, long-term social work and case management together with powerful therapeutic-based mentoring. Our individual and goals-based programmes reach tamariki and rangatahi that otherwise slip through the cracks. In doing so, we help ‘break the cycle’ of youth offending in Aotearoa.

Thank you Auckland Council and Mayor Wayne Brown for supporting the work we do at TYLA. Seeing the value of prevention work with our young people is critical to ensure we can do work before it escalates, and equally if we can intervene with those who have offended and work towards better options for their future then that is a win for our communities aswell.
Crime doesn’t pay. But it certainly costs us. When a group of youths ram-raid a dairy, it’s not just the Local business owner who suffers the blow. The whole community deals with the fallout and foots the social and economic bill. So it makes sense that we invest early in crime prevention and keep kids on the straight and narrow. It costs a hell of a lot less than punishment and picking up the pieces that’s for sure. Which is why I’m pleased to have secured $60,000 funding for the TYLA Youth Development Trust. They’re an impressive organisation that produces serious results. Like decreasing reoffending rates by 75%. Everyone deserves to feel safe on our streets and this is just one way we’re tackling crime in Auckland. #fixauckland #crime #community #prevention #safercities #youthcrime

Our Co-General Manager Jolene Cartwright and Social Work Practice Supervisor Nooroa Pianui-Moutira were blessed to have the opportunity to speak with the one and only Duncan Garner @duncangarnerpodcast to talk about the mahi we do. A massive thank you to the beautiful Alana who shared her experience with TYLA during a very vulnerable time in her life. Every donation made to TYLA is helping to keep our doors open to ensure we help more young people like Alana to have hopes & dreams and “Turn Your Life Around”.
