We love this place!
About us
Waitaki District Council provides a huge range of facilities and services for a population of around 20,000 residents. We employ outstanding people whose skills and experience reflect our desire to provide the best for these facilities and services. They include water and roading engineers, horticulture specialists, urban planners, accountants and other financial specialists, building inspectors, public health experts, IT and software engineers, swim instructors and lifeguards, communication professionals, event co-ordinators, curators, parking officers, administrators, PAs, HR specialists, librarians, and customer service staff. Our staff come from all over the world (everywhere except Antarctica, in fact). Most of our employees live in and around Oamaru and enjoy an enviable lifestyle free of gridlock traffic and pollution. Historically a food-producing region, Waitaki's food tourism market is growing, as are adventure tourism opportunities. We have beautiful lakes, tramping, fishing and hunting; and beaches with great surf and brilliant white sand - weekend plans here consist of asking, 'what cool thing would we like to do next?' Oamaru is Waitaki's main town. Home to around 12,000 people, Oamaru offers the historic Victorian precinct, little blue penguins and Steampunk HQ. There are more artists here than you can shake a stick and our residents love dressing up, having a festival, any excuse, really. We have award-winning restaurants, wineries, craft breweries and the Whitestone Geopark's magnificent geological sites. The scenery is exquisite: spectacular mountains, shimmering lakes - we like to bike: the A2O cycle trail extends from Aoraki Mt Cook all the way to Oamaru on the eastern coast. What are you waiting for? Come work with us.

The weather's warming, and that's good news for the Oamaru Public Gardens water play area. Concreting work was paused as ground temperatures were too low to get it done well. Our contractors spent that time putting in the native plantings around the site, and those plants are bedding in nicely. This new feature replaces the paddling pools, and is a far more interactive with pumps, dams and more. Shade sails will be in place for those bright UV days ahead. We're hoping to have this area open by early November for children of all ages. The play area was constructed over late Autumn through to now as there's usually not much call for water play during those frosty winter days, but summer is on the way. You might notice the pattern of the water areas mirror the arms of Lake Benmore, Lake Aviemore and the Waitaki River - with a few dams and spillways separating them. The seals will be back soon as well!

Smarter street-lighting is on the way… Streetlights in Oamaru and the surrounding area are being upgraded in the next few months, with the aim of saving money and expanding their potential uses. The photocells on the top of the lamps are being replaced with a smart-system control unit – which will allow Waitaki District Council to control the lights directly. The smart-system will save money, by providing more reliable usage data for billing, reducing total power consumption, and reducing electricity drain at peak times. https://lnkd.in/gMx-e29p
