The global movement envisioning a future free from plastic pollution.
Tungkol sa amin
#breakfreefromplastic (BFFP) is a global movement envisioning a future free from plastic pollution. Since its launch in 2016, more than 2,000 organizations and 11,000 individual supporters from across the world have joined the movement to demand massive reductions in single-use plastics and push for lasting solutions to the plastic pollution crisis. BFFP member organizations and individuals share the shared values of environmental protection and social justice and work together through a holistic approach to bring about systemic change. This means tackling plastic pollution across the whole plastics value chain—from extraction to disposal—focusing on prevention rather than cure and providing effective solutions.

🚨 NEW STUDY found microplastics in the endometrial tissue of women with multiple miscarriages. Researchers detected microplastic in all 22 uterus samples tested, consisting of 6 different plastic polymers in colors like blue, green, and black. ⚠️⚠️ In mice, these particles were linked to reduced fertility. Previous studies have already found microplastics in lungs, blood, and even breast milk. 🫁🩸🍼 WE NEED A FUTURE FREE AND SAFE FROM PLASTIC POLLUTION. 📣🗣️ Tell @unep and the governments of the world to #BreakFreeFromPlastic by signing the Global Plastics Treaty petition 👉 https://lnkd.in/gYCSsr2C 🌿 Learn more about the study: https://lnkd.in/gMwv4XZ4 #BeatPlasticPollution #ToxicPlastics

#BreakFreeFromPlastic Global Coordinator Von Hernandez echoed the call of environmental groups for the passage of a comprehensive Single-Use Plastic Ban as an essential policy tool to stop plastic pollution by shifting corporate dependence on throwaway packaging models to more sustainable reuse and refill systems. Single-use plastic is not a clean-up problem but a pollution problem, Hernandez stressed, adding that the only way to prevent it is to stop its production and avoid using it in the first place. https://lnkd.in/gev2TJTh

Enough is enough. The world is already drowning in plastic. It’s time to stop treating our planet like a landfill and start thinking of the health of its people and the planet! We need a strong #PlasticsTreaty to end this madness and end the age of plastic pollution. Learn more about the Plastics Treaty 👇 https://lnkd.in/g727pkaN #BreakFreeFromPlastic #INC5

🧠 Researchers found the amount of plastics in brain samples increased by about 50% between 2016 and 2024. This may reflect the rise in environmental plastic pollution and increased human exposure. As we recently celebrated #MentalHealthDay, let's also reflect on the hidden threats to our well-being. Microplastics, now found in the brain, raise concerns about their potential impact on our overall health. Understanding the link between pollution and mental health is a step toward a healthier future for all. #BreakFreeFromPlastic

🤯 A recent study examining the potential impact on sperm quality and reproductive organ weights found microplastics in the reproductive systems of both humans and dogs. ❗ Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, like bisphenols, phthalates, and styrene are particularly concerning additives that are used in different plastics and they have been linked to reproductive health issues, including decreased sperm count and quality, menstrual irregularities, pregnancy complications, and overall reduced fertility. https://lnkd.in/g9_kKEq8

This new peer-reviewed study found toxic flame retardants in black plastic household products including food containers, kitchen utensils, toys, and more. ❓ How did toxic flame retardants, used in electronics, end up in products like black plastic spatulas?
🍣 Toxic chemicals in your plastic take-out sushi tray?! Our new peer-reviewed study found toxic flame retardants in black plastic household products including food containers, kitchen utensils, toys, and more. ❓ How did toxic flame retardants, used in electronics, end up in products like black plastic spatulas? 📺 Since electronics are widely recycled, it's likely that these dangerous chemicals are a result of the dirty #plastic #recycling of e-waste. Toxic flame retardants are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, and reproductive and developmental toxicity. 👶 Finding flame retardants in plastic toys and food-contact items is especially worrisome because studies have shown these chemicals can leach out of kitchen utensils into food, as well as children’s saliva through mouthing of toys. 🍼 Toxic flame retardant chemicals were found in 85% of analyzed plastic products, including the banned substance deca-BDE and its replacements, which were also recently detected in breast milk. To solve this problem, we need strong state and federal laws to ban dangerous chemicals and plastics! https://lnkd.in/geVtHmrd

Whose Trash is it Anyway? 🏔️ For six years, The Himalayan Cleanup (THC) spearheaded by BFFP-AP member, Zero Waste Himalaya, has gathered data via brand audits to determine top corporate polluters in the fragile Himalaya landscape. Consumer-led waste management alone won't solve the problem. Corporations need to take responsibility for the waste their products create! That's why advocates have called for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the Himalayas. Read more in this op-ed: https://lnkd.in/gJ9xy-Ua #EPR #PolluterPays #brandaudit

🤔 Ever wondered what happens to the soft plastic that you return to the supermarket for recycling? 🔥 The results of the investigation reveal that 70% of the tracked soft plastic bundles that reached a known destination are burnt, not recycled.
🤔 Ever wondered what happens to the soft plastic that you return to the supermarket for recycling? Well, we've managed to find out. 🕵️ We placed tracking devices into 40 bundles of soft plastic packaging and dropped them at front-of-store collection points at Sainsbury's and Tesco supermarkets across England. 🔥 The results of our investigation reveal that 70% of the tracked soft plastic bundles that reached a known destination is burnt, not recycled. 🚢 The rest ended up at recycling facilities that downcycle soft plastic waste into products other than packaging – the majority of which were in Türkiye. ⚠️ Environmental law NGO ClientEarth warns that there is strong evidence that soft plastic recycling claims are misleading the public. 🛒 Since 2021, major UK supermarkets, including Sainsbury's and Tesco, have been rolling out front-of-store collection points to recycle soft plastic packaging, while “Recycle with bags at large supermarkets” labels are now seen across an extensive range of soft plastic packaging. 🙅 But soft plastic packaging is acknowledged by the waste management industry and the UK Government to be incredibly challenging to recycle... 🏭 With plastic production set to triple by 2060, these schemes are a symptom of a system that is out of control. 🗣️ Supermarkets are part of the problem. But they’re also part of the solution. So we’re calling on Sainsbury’s and Tesco to publicly support a cut in global plastic production by 40% by 2040.
