🙀A legal ruling in Kenya has delivered a huge blow to a flagship carbon offset project used by Meta, Netflix, British Airways and other multinational corporations, which has long been under fire from Indigenous activists. ❌In a case brought by 165 members of affected communities, the ruling affirms that two of the biggest conservancies set up by the controversial Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) have been established unconstitutionally and have no basis in law. Too many of these carbon offset schemes follow the same outdated model as traditional “fortress” conservation – claiming to ‘protect’ land while trampling over the rights of the Indigenous owners of it, and making handsome profits🤑 in the process 👇 https://lnkd.in/emXrgZwx

#DRCconflict 🔎According to credible reports received by MRG, Indigenous communities living in affected areas find themselves in a situation of particular vulnerability. 🪖The situation is having a severe impact on the lives of the indigenous Batwa people, especially those living in and around their ancestral lands within the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, already marginalized by a long history of human rights violations against them. 🪙The presence of minerals and other raw materials in the areas around the Kahuzi-Biega National Park could soon increase the violence faced by this Batwa community as armed groups seek to profit from these valuable commodities. #Tanzania has a long and troubling history of evicting communities from their lands. This has happened under the guise of expanding protected conservation areas 🦁 The land is then leased to expand lucrative wildlife tourism and elite hunting grounds 🎯🦁 🫸🏿Various policies push the Maasai to relocate: criminalizing their livelihoods, setting limits to grazing that are harmful to the livestock, depriving them of social services, among others 👇🏿 https://lnkd.in/eap4ryMc

“We are displaced by war, and killed by peace now" ⚖️In the #Philippines, the Teduray-Lambangian groups are claiming 208,158 hectares of ancestral land in Maguindanao and portions of Sultan Kudarat. ⚠️For Leticio Datuwata, the Timuay labi or Supreme tribal chieftain, they are being killed for trying to secure their ancestral domain in the hard-fought Bangsamoro. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dQb3xSBM

🇳🇴❄️Indigenous Sami are facing an increasingly tough battle to maintain their way of life as land is pinched in a relentless green infrastructure drive 🌬️Their reindeer won’t go near wind farms due to the noise and human presence. “They put wind farms in the middle of nowhere, [where they claim] ‘there is nothing’, but there is reindeer husbandry. It is the workplace of people,” said Eira 🦌“We are losing land we have used for maybe thousands of years. Many of the people who have been cut out of reindeer herding are 30, 40, 50 years old. What do they do? Many of them turn to alcohol. The reindeer Sami people, we are not educated in the Norwegian way, so when you are pressed out from your way of living, your world collapses.”👇 https://lnkd.in/dD8B9jiU
