Overwhelming scientific evidence shows that where Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendants, and local communities manage forests and have strong rights over them, deforestation is reduced, natural habitats are safeguarded, and climate change is significantly slowed. The data is clear. Secure land tenure is central to the fight against climate change. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dYyrTYtA

Oweesta's COO shares her thoughts from the Enterprise Community Partners' Tribal Housing Summit below.
Program Management | Partnership Building | Strategic Planning | Public Policy | Emergent Learning | Program Design
Heading home from the Enterprise Community Partners Tribal Housing Summit reenergized. I was pushed to think harder about our work by so many wonderful partners and presentations, including Lakota Vogel’s keynote address where she pointed out that “What we perceive is how we proceed,” so we need to think about how we look at and approach the community development work we do and data and stories we share. We need to look at how to drive change around the lake to support conditions for the fish to thrive. Wonderful summit, Tonya Plummer, and it was so nice connecting with colleagues (Jamie Olson, Sayre Savage, Lanalle Smith)!

Our long time partner Consultoría Técnica Comunitaria AC (CONTEC) recently finished the School on Ancestral Territories Defense. For three days, representatives of seven communities that CONTEC advises and accompanies in their processes of territorial defense and forced displacement, attended the workshop ‘Political advocacy for social change’. For this last workshop The Indigenous Peoples Rights International of Mexico was invited to share with community leaders from Bacajípare, Huitosachi, Mogótavo, El Manzano, Monterde, Mesa de Guitayvo and Bosques San Elías Repechike. CONTEC's school seeks to provide and enhance tools for strategic planning and political advocacy. Undoubtedly, these lessons learned will help to strengthen the community-based organization and solidarity that underpins the different struggles of the Rarámuri and Ódami Indigenous Peoples of Sierra Tarahumara and which share the same values: dignity, justice and the protection of life. #IndigenousPeoples #selfdetermination #mexico

These Indigenous youth are so inspiring. May their commitment and action inspire all of us to empower and respect the next generation of leaders. Grateful to our partners The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility and If Not Us Then Who.
Promoting local and Indigenous community tenure rights is more than just about land ownership. It involves empowering young people, ensuring their voices are heard, and upholding their rights. By doing so, we build more inclusive communities and nurture the next generation of leaders. For International Youth Day, The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility reached out to young leaders from communities across the globe, inviting them to share their stories. They spoke about their experiences in advocating for tenure rights, gender inclusiveness, and climate action. They even shared some powerful messages for today’s leaders. Here’s a glimpse of what they had to say.
