  • Meet Emelda, one of the women informal e-waste collectors and dismantlers who was provided with hands-on technical and administrative training on the proper management of e-waste at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)/Treatment, Storage and Disposal (TSD) in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City -- a facility that was established under the GEF- funded project, “Implementation of PCB Management Programs for Electric Cooperatives and Safe E-wastes Management.” This project is implemented by UNIDO and DENR- EMB. E-waste is known to contain harmful chemicals like POPs PBDE and heavy metals, posing significant health risks, especially to women and children. Despite these dangers, the informal waste sector (IWS) views e-waste as an expanding resource and a vital source of livelihood. Recognizing the crucial role women play in the e-waste trade, the project provided specialized training to raise awareness about the hazardous effects of toxic pollutants. These trainings, along with forums and workshops, have empowered women like Emelda to strengthen their technical skills and actively participate in decision-making processes related to the business aspects of the MRF/TSD and in their own Associations of Junkshops or Dismantlers (Samahan ng Jukshop o Mangangalakal). As a result, these women now have a more steady income from collecting and dismantling CRTs and e-waste, hold leadership positions in their associations and have increased their knowledge on proper e-waste management, allowing them to effectively do their business without harming human health and the environment. The project has so far successfully disposed of 1.15 tons of POPs PBDE-contaminated plastic casings and 800 tons of lead-laden cathode ray tubes (CRTs), contributing to improved health, environmental protection, and increased involvement of the IWS in e-waste management. #EmpoweringWomen #EwasteToIWasto #TogetherWEEECan #UNIDOResultsYouCanSee #UNIDOPh #ProgressbyInnovation

  • UNIDO: Forging an Inclusive and Resilient Future for Filipino MSMEs Five solar chest freezers were installed in and handed over to the Municipality of Carles in Iloilo by the “Global Partnership for Improving the Food Cold Chain in the Philippines”, a project implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). These innovative freezers are set to revolutionize fisheries development in the area.   🔌 Off-Grid Solution: Carles, known for its abundant scallops, faces a challenge: local fisherfolk lack the resources to process and sell their catch effectively. As an island municipality in off-grid areas, Carles needed a sustainable solution to maximize economic opportunities from its fishery sector.   🌊 The Solution: Solar-powered chest freezers! These units harness the power of the sun to keep seafood fresh.   👏 Community Impact: Fisheries play a vital role in Carles’ community and family life. With these solar chest freezers, local fisherfolk can now process and preserve their catch effectively, extending their shelf lives, and enabling better market access. These bring expanded and sustainable livelihood opportunities for off-grid communities, advancing their economic growth and empowering them toward climate action and food security.   This initiative is implemented in partnership with DENR, TESDA, ATMOshpere and UNIDO.   #UNIDOPh #UNIDOing #UNIDOResultsYouCanSee
