Empowering Teachers with Skills for Tomorrow

About us

Beaj is an early-stage EdTech startup on a mission to make high quality 21st century skill-development affordable and accessible to anyone in Pakistan. Even after completing between 6-16 years of secondary or tertiary education, 60+ million young Pakistanis graduate without the essential knowledge, tools and skills required to succeed in the 21st century. These include language proficiency and the ability to communicate effectively, digital literacy, and an entrepreneurial mindset to create alternatives to limited job options in an emerging economy. Making matters worse, most young people have nowhere to turn for career guidance or support in charting out viable paths. Limited access to essential knowledge and skills is a huge barrier to human agency that holds millions back from achieving upward socioeconomic mobility. Beaj Education aims to tackle this challenge by creating high-quality educational products, scaled through technology, at affordable price points that the Pakistani market currently does not offer. We believe that everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, should be able to build the skills they aspire to.

Founder & CEO, Beaj Education | EdTech for the Underserved

Super excited to share leadership updates that mark the beginning of a new chapter at Beaj Education! 🚀 Asad Liaqat is transitioning from the advisory role he’s played since last December to lead the research and analytics functions at Beaj on a fractional basis. With a PhD in Public Policy from Harvard, Asad brings over a decade of experience in International Development and Behavioral Science, as well as 4 years as a Tech Economist. Taimur Shah is also transitioning from advisor to (fractional) CTO. Taimur is a rare combination of Software Engineer and a Development Economist. A recent MPA-ID from Harvard, he was previously a Software Architect at IBM Watson and the Founding Head of CERP Labs. These updates come at the heels of Tehreem Zaman taking over as COO. Tehreem brings unique insights into Pakistan’s Education sector with a decade of management experience ranging from running high-end private schools to overseeing monitoring and evaluation at nonprofits. Needless to say, I’m ecstatic about the expanding brain power at Beaj! 🧠 Our leadership team is ready and committed to transforming Beaj into a true "learning organization" that not only uses data and evidence for decision making but also actively generates data and evidence to contribute to the fields of Education, EdTech, Behavioral Economics /Science and Learning Engineering. Our goals are ambitious and the path is tough - 💪🏽 we want to: ✔ Democratize high quality skill-development, ✔ Bridge the digital divide - make edtech work for people currently left out of the system,  ✔ Upskill and help expand agency of a million+ low-income Pakistani youth and teachers. A huge Thank You 🙏 to our team, our advisors, our mentors, #ToolsCompetition / The Learning Agency for helping us lift off and pushing us to think seriously about learning engineering and the The Agency Fund for enabling this new phase that embeds rigorous testing and research into product development, implementation and impact. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting (and intense!) journey. The best is yet to come! #EdTech #Techforgood #AIforgood #Education #datadriven #LearningEngineering #SkillDevelopment #DigitalInclusion #Pakistan

A bunch of us entrepreneurs met with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb yesterday, who's visiting DC. The conversation was refreshingly honest. He heard us out as we candidly discussed the challenges we face setting up and running companies in Pakistan: taxes, internet disruptions, money transfer difficulties, and more. He talked about the tough reality of structural reform, asked for ideas and took suggestions on policy and practice. I greatly appreciated that he listened to pushback on some current policies (and even took notes!). It was genuinely refreshing. One of those times when the flicker of hope returns! A big thanks to Aly Fahd and his amazing ability to gather people and faciliate great discussions, and to Ambassador Rizwan Saeed for hosting us. It was good catching up with Mariam Nusrat, Roohi Abdullah, Adeel Rasheed, and meeting interesting new people! #policyandpractice #Pakistan

How do you Build a Lean, Mean, Dream Team at a Mission-Driven Startup on a Budget? There’s no shortage of advice on startup hiring: ➡ "The team is everything" (Agreed) ➡ "Only hire ‘A’ players" (Easier said than done in emerging markets like Pakistan) ➡ "Hire slow, fire fast" (We try, but deadlines happen...) ➡ "Hire talent when you find it, not when you need it" (Would love to, but the budget doesn’t always allow for it) ➡ “Hire as few people as possible to keep the team agile” (The trick is to know where to draw the line - burnout is real) At Beaj Education, we started with a tiny team juggling multiple roles, minimal systems, and lots of chaos. Over 2 years, as we experimented, learned and gained clarity, our team has evolved. In the spirit of Leaning-Out-Loud, here are some lessons thus far: 1️⃣ Core Values Are Essential 👉 Make them clear, reinforce them, and live by them. They determine an organization’s culture, and that attracts the kind of people you want to work with. For mission-driven startups, genuine belief in the actual change you’re trying to make is a part of this. 2️⃣ Skills can be Learned, but Attitude often Cannot 👉 Some roles require you to hit the ground running with a technical skill-set you should already have, while others have more room to grow. But to be a fit at Beaj, we require all team members to have these essential traits: competence, a can-do attitude, the willingness to work really, really hard, and the ability to take candid feedback, respectfully delivered. 3️⃣ Ownership is Key 👉 Divide responsibilities as cleanly as possible. Even when there’s overlap, one person needs to own each process/outcome. If a competent person who genuinely cares about outcomes can be fully empowered to own a function, that function will thrive. 4️⃣ Mix Experience Levels 👉 For us the magic has happened when we’ve paired senior experts with a competent manager and one or two junior associates / interns. Example - our content team: Fizza Hasan, a language acquisition expert with 30 years of experience, conceptualizes content. Ayesha Asif, an uber-organized and systematic manager, runs a complex content production process to bring content to life. She pulls in video editors and content interns as needed, who float between departments. When we need specialized content developed in other areas, we bring in domain experts as consultants. 5️⃣ Advisors Are Gold 👉 When you want to tap the brain power of very senior people on top of their fields (who you can’t dream of actually affording), you go to advisors. I’m amazed at how willingly these people take out precious time to help think things through, ask difficult questions and give advice. A huge shoutout to all the awesome advisors I regularly ping for help! 🙏 Here’s the awesome Beaj team as it stands today. We’re obviously still evolving, and striving to do better everyday! #startupteam #HR #edtech #talent
