Farming has always been a battle against multiple challenges like pests, soil depletion, and unpredictable weather. For generations, farmers have relied on synthetic fertilisers and pesticides to protect their crops. However, over time, this quick-fix solution began to show its flaws, such as degrading soil quality, harming the environment, and threatening long-term crop health. In Pakistan’s cotton fields, these struggles are well-known. WWF-Pakistan and the Better Cotton took charge and introduced the Better Cotton Support Programme with a clear goal in mind: to help farmers transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices that not only protect the land but also improve their yields. Through demonstration plots and exposure visits, WWF-Pakistan has shown farmers firsthand the impact of alternative, sustainable methods, allowing them to witness how these practices work in real life. One of the game-changers has been composting. In Khanewal, after seeing the success of compost demonstration plots, 10 farmers began preparing their own compost using crop residues, manure, and wasted vegetables and fruits. This shift from synthetic fertilisers to natural compost is transforming soil health, boosting cotton yields, and cutting costs for farmers. But composting isn’t the only win! WWF-Pakistan has also introduced alternate pest control methods. Instead of relying on chemical pesticides, farmers have been exposed to pheromone and yellow sticky traps. These traps offer a natural way to protect cotton from pests like the Pink Bollworm and White Fly. The results speak for themselves—65 farmers purchased 600 pheromone and yellow sticky traps to protect around 75 acres of cotton. These tools effectively reduce pest populations by disrupting mating patterns or ensnaring insects, making them an eco-friendly alternative to toxic chemicals. These exposure visits have done more than just educate—they’ve inspired a movement. Local farmers, once sceptical, are now champions of these sustainable methods, proving that with the right knowledge and support, agriculture can be both profitable and environmentally friendly.

🌍🌱 This #WorldFoodDay, it's time to rethink what's on your plate. #DYK Agriculture-driven deforestation is putting 86% of threatened terrestrial bird and mammal species at risk and contributes to 27% of global greenhouse gas emissions? Around 90% of deforestation results from converting forests into farmland, making our food system a major driver of habitat loss and climate change. The demand for soy, meat, and other products is driving deforestation in the Amazon, threatening biodiversity and pushing us toward an ecological tipping point. To protect our planet, we need to embrace locally sourced, seasonal, and plant-based meals. Your meals can make a difference! Learn more in the LPR Youth Edition 2024. #LPRYouth #SustainableLiving #ProtectTheAmazon #GreenFoodChoices

🚨 #BREAKING: This is a code red for nature. Species population numbers have plummeted by 73% on average since 1970.  This is getting worse over time, when it should be getting better. Vital ecosystems are on the brink of collapse. We’re dangerously close to tipping points, where the damage to our planet will cause irreversible impacts on all our lives. We must turn things around immediately. Urgent action is needed now – not tomorrow or next year. . 🗣 Share this video to #ActForOurPlanet #LPR2024 #LivingPlanetReport

WWF-Pakistan recently launched the Green School Programme at Crescent Model Higher Secondary School, kicking off with three exciting activities. These included a visit to Green Earth Recycling (GER), a facility that recycles plastic PET bottles, TetraPak, and mixed waste, along with creative wall murals, a paper mache workshop, and an insightful workshop on Natural Disaster Management. Students visited GER to learn about the importance of recycling and the fight against plastic pollution. In the Climate Change and Natural Disasters Workshop, around 60 students from grades 6-7 participated in a thought-provoking activity that highlighted the link between climate change and natural disasters, and proposed solutions to mitigate the impact of these disasters. The Paper Mache Workshop focused on the importance of recycling paper waste by encouraging students to turn their own discarded paper into useful everyday items, fostering creativity and environmental responsibility. Through these activities, we aim to empower students with knowledge and practical skills to address environmental challenges and take action for a sustainable future.
