Azores Makes History by Creating North Atlantic Ocean’s Largest Marine Protected Area Network!
The Autonomous Region of the #Azores has enacted pioneering legislation that establishes the largest network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the North Atlantic. 🦈 🐋
This landmark decision protects 287,000 square kilometres of ocean surrounding the archipelago, with half of this area fully protected. It marks a major achievement in global marine conservation.
The legislative proposal was the result of a collaborative process led by the Azores Government, supported by the Blue Azores Program—a partnership between the Regional Government of the Azores, Oceano Azul Foundation, and the Waitt Institute.
This success is the culmination of years of dedicated scientific research, advocacy, and collaboration. A comprehensive participatory process involved over 40 meetings with representatives from diverse sectors, including the fishing industry, maritime transport, tourism operators, and environmental NGOs. Their expertise, commitment, and cooperation were vital in co-creating this MPA network.
This decision brings #Portugal closer to the global goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030.
Congratulations to the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores and to all the people of the Azores!
