Juliana Monteiro, aluna de doutoramento, e Cristina Branquinho professora de CIÊNCIAS, lideram um projeto que visa a criação de uma técnica de “restauro ecológico” baseada no cultivo de musgos em laboratórios e estufas para posterior implementação em áreas queimadas. As zonas ardidas perdem matéria orgânica após os incêndios e os musgos desempenham um papel fundamental na fixação de nutrientes e no aumento da infiltração de água, essenciais para a regeneração do solo. “Esses musgos são mais resilientes do que se imagina. Mesmo em áreas queimadas com alta severidade, onde o solo está praticamente reduzido a cinzas, eles conseguem regenerar-se em pouco tempo.”, salienta Juliana Monteiro. A short visit to our field station! 🌳 Our 221 ha Herdade da Ribeira Abaixo Field Station (HRA), a Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site, is central to CE3C’s field-based studies. This unique living lab provides an invaluable site for pilot studies in the Montado ecosystem and is integrated into the LTsER Montado network. It also serves as a well-equipped hub for advanced training in biodiversity, conservation, sustainable management, and nature-based solutions. The station includes an Education Centre with a conference room, lodging, and lab facilities designed for students, researchers, and visiting scientists. 📢 HRA is also a focal point for social outreach, hosting several citizen-science initiatives and featuring pedestrian biodiversity trails open to the public, fostering engagement and environmental awareness within the broader community. 🔬 Throughout its existence, HRA has welcomed CE3C researchers and students from the Undergraduate Programme in Biology, Master’s in Conservation Biology, and PhD students, who enhance their knowledge in a real-life context, carry out research and acquire essential skills for their careers in science. How to estimate the impact of climate change on cities? The climate risk dashboard developed by the PROVIDE project is an interactive online tool that provides detailed information on different future global warming scenarios and their expected impacts. Users can define risk thresholds for heat stress in cities, for example heat waves or extremely high temperature levels that should be avoided, and then access information on emissions scenarios that can help prevent them. CE3C researcher Tiago Capela Lourenço leads the line of research dedicated to iconic cities and regions, which includes the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The impact (of the lack) of a protein A team led by CE3C PhD student Susana Martins — and coordinated by researchers Sólveig Thorsteinsdóttir and Ana Rita Carlos — has discovered how muscle cells with alterations in the protein laminin-α2 struggle to grow, develop, and fuse properly. Since these processes are crucial for muscle formation during embryonic development and for muscle recovery after injury, the findings of this new study, published in Life Science Alliance, open exciting opportunities for the development of therapies to address a potentially fatal form of congenital muscular dystrophy. #CE3C #ce3cresearch #research #science #genetherapy #musculardystrophy #muscledisease
