Bridge AI seeks to bridge the gap between technological advancements and ethical, regulatory frameworks in Portugal. Supported by partners like the Center for Responsible AI, Champalimaud Foundation, INESC-ID and Unbabel. Throughout 2024, expert working groups have been reflecting on the key ethical, legal, literacy, and practical aspects of implementing the AI Act. After two days of an in-person workshop focused on identifying concrete actions to anticipate the EU AI Act in Portugal, the preliminary results were presented on Saturday at the Champalimaud Foundation during the Bridge AI Conference. The event also featured talks and roundtables with international experts and key national decision-makers. It’s a pleasure to be part of such a passionate, multidisciplinary group working to position Portugal at the forefront of AI-driven regulation! A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the Bridge AI Conference, and to Helena Moniz, Joana L., Nuno André and António Novais, whose vision and hard work brought this project to life. #CenterforResponsibleAI #AI #BridgeAI #AIAct #Regulation #Innovation

🌍 Last Thursday, we hosted a workshop on Sustainability in AI at Instituto Superior Técnico. Paolo Romano and Maria da Loura Casimiro kicked off the workshop with a presentation of some of the most innovative solutions for sustainable AI, developed by INESC-ID. They introduced three methods that enhance the efficiency of modern AI platforms through optimizations across the hardware and software stack Following this, Marcos Treviso (Instituto de Telecomunicações) discussed the future of machine translation (MT) by comparing transformers with more efficient alternatives like state space models (SSMs), offering insights into creating scalable, high-quality, and sustainable translation systems. Next, Nuno Lourenço (CISUC - Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra) addressed the growing energy demands of machine learning, presenting research on designing energy-efficient models inspired by evolution and the human brain, aiming to reduce energy consumption without sacrificing performance. We concluded with a roundtable on the challenges and opportunities of Sustainable AI moderated by Paulo Dimas featuring Bernardete Ribeiro (CISUC - Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra), Catarina Farinha (Unbabel), Marcos Treviso (Instituto de Telecomunicações, Nuno Lourenço (CISUC - Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra), Paolo Romano (INESC-ID), and Pedro Bizarro (Feedzai). A big thank you to everyone who attended! This was the fourth workshop organized by our Scientific Board. Stay tuned for the final one in December, which will focus on Explainability in AI! #AI #CenterforResponsibleAI #SustainableAI #Sustainability #Workshop
