𝐞.𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐬 📣 The e.Biofilm team had the privilege of welcoming Prof. Melissa Brown, a Professor of Microbiology at Flinders University and an executive of the ARC Training Centre for Biofilm Research & Innovation, at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto last week.  🦠 Besides meeting with researchers and PhD students, Prof. Melissa shared her insights and knowledge as the speaker of the seminar “𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝑳𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬”. 👏 A big thank you to Prof. Melissa for sharing her expertise with the researchers of the Department of Chemical Engineering and making this seminar a success. #eBiofilm

𝐞.𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐬 📣 The e.Biofilm team had the pleasure of welcoming 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬, Director of the Center for Biofilm Engineering at Montana State University, at FEUP for the month of June. Besides meeting with PhD and Master’s students, Prof. Matthew was a speaker for 3 seminars held at the Department of Chemical Engineering: 📝 Microbial Communities and Microbial Interactions 📝 Biofilms and Beyond: MICRO- meets MACRO- 📝 Moving Towards Mechanistic Ecology for Microorganisms: Four Case Studies

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝! 🔬 The internship stage of the 1st Research Summer School in Microbial Communities started last Wednesday and will continue until the 18th of July, with the motto "Shadow PhD Student". Yesterday, the students participating in the internship at FEUP had the opportunity to visit the e.Biofilm laboratory.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐔𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝! The 1st UPorto Research Summer School in Microbial Communities, with the motto "Taste of PhD Experience" started on the 8th of July and will continue until the 25th, with the aim of preparing participants for life as a doctoral student. 🎯 Yesterday, Prof. Nuno Azevedo presented a lecture on "Biofilms: Structured Microbial Communities". PhD student Vânia Pinheiro also presented her work on "Utilizing Transcriptomics to Map Functionality in a Multispecies Chronic Wound Model".

𝐖𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐔𝐑𝐎𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐌𝐒 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒! Prof. Nuno Azevedo, Dr. Joana Vilas Boas, Dr. Andreia Azevedo and our PhD student Ana Barbosa attended the EUROBIOFILMS 2024 meeting from the 26th to the 29th of June in Copenhagen, Denmark. 💬 Ana presented a lecture on her work on “A Novel Multiplex mRNA PNA-FISH for Studying Gene Expression and Spatial Organization in Biofilms”. 📝 Dr. Andreia Azevedo presented a poster on the “Development of NAM-FISH for the Study of Biofilms Formed in an Advanced 3D Substrate”.

📣 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐡𝐃 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐕â𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐧𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐨 🎯 PhD student Vânia Pinheiro talks about her academic journey and background in Bioengineering and her professional achievements that lead her to pursue a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering at FEUP. 🧪 Vânia explains her research for e.Biofilm, consisting in the development and optimization of a multispecies chronic wound biofilm model, use of a transcriptomic approach, molecular techniques and confocal microscopy imaging.
