Why didn’t I do a PhD? I answered that question, when I this week spoke at the Synapse - Life Science Connect event “To PhD or not to PhD”. Always excited and humbled to share my experiences with Life Science students. Key take aways from my presentation: 🙌Find out what is important for you in a work place (I like supportive atmosphere and social colleagues) 💪🏽What things are you good at AND like to do (I always liked to plan parties, and have fun as part of the student bar) 👩🎓You don’t have to “use” your degree in your job (I’m very happy using my more generic life science skills in my work and not missing Western blot deciphering) 🔬Do a PhD if you can’t help it, and do it in a lab where you’ll be treated well Happy job hunting for the future career to all the graduates coming up :)

Thank you to everyone who attended our first PhD Clinic this year. Special thanks to Thompson Gyedu Kwarkye, PhD for helping to steer discussions. Some of the things we talked about: - The importance of networking during your PhD to improve job prospects and broaden your ideas - Work-life balance is essential, especially for those with families - Plan, plan, plan in order to make progress and structure your time, but make time for fun and rest too - Know who’s in your corner and can keep you accountable and encourage you - Dealing with writers block: know what times and environments work best for you and leverage them; try to segment the hours in your day; discipline yourself to meet your output targets; be creative about documenting your ideas (e.g. recording them on your phone and transcribing later) - Dealing with (paper) rejections: don't feel bad, it's not a reflection of your abilities; learn from it; work with mentors to keep growing yourself ...and so much more! Student at Delhi University| Deshbandhu college An undergraduate in Life Sciences| Biotechnology and Molecular biology Enthusiast| A Learner and a beginner ✨
MY EXPERIENCE AS AN UNDERGRADUATE LIFE SCIENCES STUDENT:- Being a Pure Sciences biology student is quite a hassle, as we are often categorized as 'NEET failures,' even though there are many people like me who are genuinely interested in pursuing this field. However, my journey has been nothing short of transformative. The rigorous curriculum has challenged me to think critically and pushed the boundaries of my understanding. One of the highlights has been the hands-on experience in the laboratory. Whether it was studying specimens, observing microscopic organisms, or experimenting with chemical reactions, each practical session brought the textbook theories to life. These experiences not only deepened my knowledge but also ignited a passion for research, leading me to explore areas like molecular biology and genetics. This is what I like about my degree; its interdisciplinary nature has broadened my perspective, making me appreciate the relationships between different disciplines of science. As I continue my studies, I am really looking forward to more exciting opportunities that will help me enhance my knowledge and skills ✨❇️
