“Change is not a linear process - it is something that also takes time, patience, and appreciation for all the little moments on the journey to our final destinations.” Meet Varsha Srinivasan (she/அவள்/ella/यह) Contract Management Analyst I, Community Development, City of Redwood City. Shoutout to I-NAPA - International Network of Asian Public Administrators member Genesis D. Gavino for supporting Asian American ERGs in City of Austin. This is how to create pipelines for diverse leadership.
Best-Selling Author | People, Culture & Talent Strategist | Transformational Leader | Equity Champion | Speaker & Storyteller
I recently moderated an Executive Panel discussion at the City of Austin Asian American Employee Network executive breakfast. Amazing to connect with such esteemed colleagues and have a delicious, nutritious and unique breakfast (I had the peanut butter and banana breakfast sandwich and it was AMAZING!) We had a panel of 5 executives: • Upal Barua, PE, PTOE • Genesis D. Gavino • Jessica Kingpetcharat-Bittner • Janet Pichette • Ramesh Swaminathan, P.E. Our City Manager TC Broadnax opened the event to voice his support for ERG's and Affinity groups and reiterate his commitment for the Front Line Focus Sessions, designed to engage and listen to the workforce. Here are the questions that were posed to the panel: 1. How has your heritage influenced your leadership journey, and in what ways do you integrate your cultural values into your leadership style? 2. What challenges have you faced as an Asian American leader, and how did you overcome them? 3. What role has mentorship played in your career, and how can Asian American leaders seek out or become effective mentors? 4. What advice would you give to emerging Asian American leaders on embracing their cultural identity in the workplace? 5. How can the City of Austin create a more inclusive environment that supports Asian American leadership A brilliant discussion with many insights ensued. Too many to detail. Key Takeaways: • Relationship building is key to success • Build a brand • Find a mentor and be a mentor (give and take the tough/real feedback) • Don't be afraid of your authentic voice • Make yourself known Although these takeaways seem broad - they were extremely powerful for the Asian American Employee Network when tied in with powerful storytelling and lessons learned. Can’t wait for the next one!! Angela Misir-Swindler #affinitygroup #asianamerican #executivepanel #culturematters #inclusion #leadership

Lois Yum is a shining star in public service. We are excited to have you bring your magic to I-NAPA - International Network of Asian Public Administrators board!
What an incredible experience at this year’s ICMA Conference! I had the opportunity to attend the ICMA Opening Party, SheLeadsGov Luncheon, sessions, and receptions, while reconnecting with those I’ve met through volunteering with Cal-ICMA’s Marketing & Communications Committee and Manager Support Initiatives Committee over the past year. I also had the chance to meet some amazing new people and catch up with familiar faces. I was also elected as a Director-at-Large for I-NAPA - International Network of Asian Public Administrators this upcoming year. I’m so excited to continue supporting this amazing organization and the work they do, keep connecting with more members, and can’t wait to see all the amazing things we’ll achieve this next year. I finally got to meet my Municipal Management Association of Southern California (MMASC) mentor, Philippe Eskandar, City Manager for San Marino, in person as well. He has been an incredible mentor, offering endless wisdom, support, and guidance over the past year. Philippe has truly become my personal advisory board and I feel so blessed to have been paired with him. And finally, shout out to my City Manager, Pamela Antil, for her incredible service as the outgoing Vice President, West Coast Region of the 2023-24 ICMA Executive Board. Pam has made a tremendous impact on the organization, profession, countless individuals in the field, our city, and me personally. Thank you for always being an inspiration, a powerful leader, and for never giving up on encouraging everyone around you to grow and reach their full potential. I’m so fortunate to call you both my City Manager and an extraordinary role model. I can’t believe #ICMA2024 is over, but I’m already looking forward to 2025. Can’t wait to see everyone next year!
