aljeel and Abbott announce the successful implant of the world’s first official Aveir™ DR dual chamber leadless pacemaker outside of north America, at the King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Following this initial implant, additional implants were successfully conducted in other leading hospitals across Saudi Arabia within the same week: Saud Al Babtain Cardiac Center – Eastern Health Cluster in Dammam on June 24, King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh on June 26 and King Faisal Medical City in Riyadh on June 27  In a conventional pacemaker procedure, an incision is made in the upper chest, and one or more leads are guided through a vein into the heart. The pacemaker is then connected to the lead(s) and inserted beneath the skin, and the incision is closed. Aveir™ leadless pacing system utilizes a catheter-based approach through the femoral vein, delivering a self-contained leadless pacemaker directly into the heart without the need for a surgical pocket or lead.   Because nearly 80% of people who receive a pacemaker need a dual-chamber option to pace both chambers on the right side of the heart, Aveir™ DR has been designed to address a critical need for these patients. Abbott also designed the Aveir™ DR leadless pacemaker to be retrievable, so the system can be replaced or retrieved as therapy needs evolve. Our recent event in Riyadh, which we organized in collaboration with our partner bioMérieux, was a huge success. We discussed the latest methods for using genomic data to inform industry sector decision-making.
