Wrapping up after two intense and rewarding couple of days: 🌱 🌍 First stop London, contributing to shared insights of what "good actually looks like" to strengthen the work of the industry #roadmap towards #sustainable #shipping. Thank you to The Sustainable Shipping Initiative for being bold and visionary! 🇸🇪 🇳🇴 🇫🇮 🇩🇰 🇮🇸 Second stop Oslo, spending the day with the best minds exploring ideas for #impact-driven #financing mechanisms to progress maritime #green #corridors in the #Nordics. Thank you DNV for your leadership and excellence! During these two days, being invited at the table, I have enjoyed the benefit of feeling trusted to freely share insights, opinions and ideas. I truly believe when you feel empowered to speak your mind, it is in these kinds of environments, where opportunities can be more readily identified. Through open discussion, agreement and disagreement, we build on the collective insight in the room, together. Perhaps this is amongst the most meaningful ways we can spend our time, contributing to shared progress.

Navigating your transformational journey
Om oss
Supporting transformational change in shipping By 2050, we are expected to have solved many of the challenges currently facing humanity; We must clean the oceans from plastic waste, we must restore fisheries and coral reefs, we must stop deforestation, and perhaps we must change the way we engage in global trade. Perhaps in 2050, we no longer fly for leisure and perhaps we are all, if not vegans, then vegetarians. Possibly, in 2050, shipping is no longer a giants’ game benefitting from efficiency of scale. Perhaps it looks all different. In 2018, IMO members signed a pledge to have reduced the carbon footprint of international shipping by half in 2050, which translates to a reduction down to 350 m tonnes CO2 per year, or the equivalent of 56 m roundtrip business flights Copenhagen - Singapore. Regardless of what future scenario we believe in, one thing is clear; shipping is on a transformational journey towards decarbonisation. This will be accomplished through the development of e.g. a more flexible fuel mix, including renewable fuels and its up-scaling through new global fuel supply infrastructures. It will include new technologies and new ship designs. Digitalisation will play a huge part in all this. But the winner of this game, for sure, will be the one who identifies new business models to deliver value in new ways. We can help your company preparing for this future, by looking at sustainable strategic options and by taking a systems perspective to your business development- and innovation agenda. We can help you understand how you need to collaborate in the industry to stay on top. With the constant overflow of information we are awash with, we can untangle that complexity for you, and make it easier for you to make those hard investment decisions.

🌎 2025 As we start this new shiny year, we have something special for you: Here is our white-paper "Maritime Sustainability - The Holistic Approach". The insights presented herein are the result of the last five years of work together with motivated and curious customers, partners and industry colleagues, all sharing a vision for a better maritime future. There is an urgent need to improve #sustainability in the #maritime industry. Sustainability is not a ticket-to-trade, not only decarbonisation, and not only reporting. It is essential for ensuring our planetary health improves and remains repairable while we elevate soceital conditions. It is also a strategic imperative for making the right decisions in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world.

Completion of the beginning - #FuelTransitionRoadmap for Nordic Shipping This Tuesday the Fuel Transition Roadmap for Nordic Shipping was launched by a meeting of the project partners at Diesel House Copenhagen. https://lnkd.in/da6kPnZW We at Fürstenberg Maritime Advisory have been supporting partners, giving our feedback and joining for milestone events in Sweden and Iceland. We think that the Nordic Roadmap contains methodology elements applicable anywhere. Speakers at the launch included : Morten Bødskov - Danish Minister of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Romina Pourmokhtari - Swedish Minister of Climate and Environment Marianne Sivertsen Næss - Norwegian Minister of Fishing and Ocean Policy Perhaps some of the comments from these ministers were not too surprising. Frustration was expressed regarding bureaucratic barriers to EU support despite large funds being available. Energy security was mentioned as was the role of government schemes to support investment risk. However, the comment "Public funding cannot do it alone" stood out for an industry audience so often expressing the view that private funding cannot do it alone and lamenting the lack of supporting regulation. As sponsors, the The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council should be congratulated on this project which helps bridge the realities of policy and industry. During a day moderated by Jenny Braat of Danske Maritime (Danish Maritime) we heard from the event hosts MAN Energy Solutions - Bjarne Foldager and the lead authors from DNV - Dorthe Alida Slotvik, Øvind Endresen and Eirill Bachmann Mehammer. Handover of the report was marked by Sveinung Oftedal, Tuva Kristine Flagstad-Andersen and Ida Heimann Larsen. Following a panel discussion and presentation of the case studies we heard from Linda Sigrid Hammer, Erik W Jakobsen and Julia Hansson about overcoming three key barriers of Regulatory development, fuel availability and MGC public support opportunities. Rasmus Holm Bidstrup told us about the MAN Energy Solutions progress with a 2 stroke ammonia engine. Later we even visited the test engine, which recently has successfully started a test schedule on four cylinders. Our interest alongside the decarbonisation of maritime transport is the holistic sustainability perspective. In conversations with the partners we were delighted to hear that we had provided some of the most detailed feedback during the process. We have for instance been adamant on ensuring fuels are seen on a Well to Wake basis. The Roadmap website can be found here https://lnkd.in/dRY9CsqY We look forward to next steps 🚀

I spent this afternoon catching up with the state of Swedish shipping and the energy transition, at Svensk Sjöfart's annual autumn gathering in Gothenburg. Brilliantly moderated by Pia Berglund and Fredrik Larsson, with a stunning view of the harbour front from 32 floors above, I was pleasantly surprised about the very positive vibe in the room, and delighted to be served some encouraging and refreshing insights: - We shouldn't expect any setbacks to the IMO 2050 strategy despite a leadership change in the US. The train is in motion and it can't be stopped. - The fuel shift is maybe not as costly as we think, especially since there is no ROI on a dead planet. "You won't get the transition on a bargain sale." - A lot more energy savings could be accomplished if companies would take a more holistic approach rather than shopping for a quick fix. - There could be a lot more biofuel made available with more sophisticated residual feedstock processes. - Regardless of where you stand politically regarding nuclear power, it won't solve the needs we have here and now. I particularly appreciated the comment from Anna Ledin, recently appointed Director General for the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, who urged us to not treat the climate challenge as one being separate from other environmental challenges, since they are all connected. Thank you Anna, that needed to be said. I was so thankful to hear Sveinung Oftedal on stage, who never disappoints. His analogy on IMO negotiations being a bit like planning a dinner party was spot on: Everyone may eventually have to accept what is being served, although perhaps not exactly what they wanted, a set of dishes nobody is allergic to, at least. And we mustn't forget what our goal is, to have the dinner together.

Today, at COP29 Azerbaijan, an urgent Call to Action was announced by the High-Level Climate Champions requesting targeted action from governments, regulators and policymakers, from the maritime industry and from training institutions: For Achieving a #Just #Transition for #Africa’s #Seafarers. The message is clear: there is an urgent need to invest in #skills, increase African #representation in the global seafarer community, attract more African #women to a seafarer career, and ensure that the #impact on seafarers from the maritime energy transition is supported by global labour standards. We at Fürstenberg Maritime Advisory are very proud to be signatories to this Call to Action, and are ready to support this call in any capacity we can.
