Meet Rubio Monocoat – a Green Partner The main material in our furniture is wood and there are many reasons for that. It’s beautiful and it’s also an exceptionally durable material that has proven the test of time over centuries. To preserve the appearance of a wood surface for several years, the key is to apply the right finish. We are happy to have found the perfect solution, and partner, for this. Established more than 100 years ago in Belgium, Rubio Monocoat started out as a manufacturer of mastic. But it’s their own product, the Rubio Monocoat Oil, that has earned them world-reputation. Based on molecular-bindning, a new technology developed by Rubio Monocoat, the oil was launched in 2005. - Treating the wood in a way that’s good for both people and the environment is a matter of course for us. With the hard-wax oil from Rubio Monocoat we have found just that, says Joakim Lundgren, Head of Design & Sustainability. We use Rubio Monocoat products for both pre-treatment as well as maintenance and by using oil, and not varnish, maintenance can be carried out on site. The oil from Rubio Monocoat has 0% VOC. This means it doesn’t emit any volatile organic compounds, which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. The oil also has zero chemicals om the SIN List, a list of hazardous chemicals that are used in a wide variety of articles, products and manufacturing processes around the globe. - We know that indoor air generally has higher concentrations of many VOCs, compared to outdoor air. Built in the middle of a motorway in 2014, Shopping Center Goodman, is the landmark in Hämeenlinna, and a shopping centre known everywhere in Finland. To improve customer comfort and stand out in competition, the shopping center underwent an extensive development project and interior change during 2023-2024. Looking for furniture that both enhance the shopping experience and is durable and easy to maintain, AFRY Ark Studio Finland, the architects responsible for the project, chose Green Furniture Concept. Inviting places, big and small, where created with Ascent. Accessible seats make sure everyone can enjoy a pause. The result has been very positive. Meet John Newland, President, Green Furniture Concept, Americas. 🍀Tell us, how did you and Green Furniture Concept find each other? I started on a consulting assignment, where we were to identify how Green could grow the business in the US. We delivered an analysis and a plan going forward that was very well received. They believed in what we saw, and as I was offered to be President of Green Furniture Concept in Americas. I was hesistant, it wasn’t really in my plans, but I’d fallen in love with the products. And when I met the team, we really clicked. I’ve also grown up with wood, and worked a lot with wood at Herman Miller, so in some sense it was a bit like coming home. 🍀What have you done prior to Green? I’m an architect and designer and have spent my life selling concepts. In some sense you could say I’m a translator between design and sales. Before joining Green I’ve worked as consultant for several design firms, and for many years I was the VP of Architecture and Design at Herman Miller. I’ve also introduced European design to the American market as Vice President for IFC, International Contract Furnishings. I have a passion for the design of products. Looking at Green Furniture Concept’s furniture – it is art, but it also functional. 🍀What is happening on the public space arena in North America? Any trends you want to share with us? It’s unusual times in the furniture world. There is this generation of workers that say “we don’t need to come to an office”. For those who come back after all, they want their own cubicles. But they also want meeting spaces. The same applies to those coming from universities into professional life. They want common meeting places, like they had when they were studying, regardless of the industry they start working in. We also have many property owners in our city centers having the challenge of filling empty premises on the street level. They want to create places where people can meet. Buildings died during covid. Our furniture creates an energy, and can turn them into active and purposeful environments. People want to be with other people, and they want beautiful places where they can meet. 🍀Do you have a favourite Green product, and if yes, which and why? I love them all. I’m not comparing them to each other because each of them has its purpose. 🍀And one last question, what would be your dream location for our furniture? It would have to be at The Museum of Modern Art, MoMa in NYC. The perfect location. Traveling made easy The difference between a good and a great experience is often found in the details. When we designed our seating system Ascent, we thought about the times we tried to find room for our baggage and couldn’t.
