Press Release: PowerCell Secures 2 MW Order for M2Power 250 Systems in Maritime Sector PowerCell has received a groundbreaking first order for its M2Power 250 system from a leading European shipyard valued at SEK 150 million. This milestone marks the first commercial sale of a fully integrated methanol-to-power solution, an innovative technology launched in Q3 2024. This order includes a 2 MW installation of the M2Power 250 systems. The M2Power 250 system converts methanol into clean electricity to support the vessel’s internal electrical systems. Methanol is emerging as a promising alternative fuel in shipping, helping the maritime industry transition to low-emission energy solutions. Scheduled for delivery in 2029, the contract covers engineering services and product delivery, strengthening PowerCell’s position at the forefront of next-generation maritime energy solutions. Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell Group, stated: “It’s great to see yet another innovative product creating real market value so soon after its launch. With the M2Power 250, we’re taking PowerCell beyond fuel cell electrification—simplifying integration for shipyards and system integrators while accelerating hydrogen adoption in markets where infrastructure is still catching up.” Richard Berkling continues: “By expanding hydrogen availability through reformed methanol, we significantly increase the addressable market while enhancing the value we create and capture per installation. This aligns fully with our 'industrialised innovation' strategy, where integrating certified, proven solutions is equally vital in the energy transition as radical breakthroughs. Which fuel will lead the energy transition? ⚡️ Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent poll about the future of sustainable fuels and technologies. The results are in, and it turns out that hydrogen was the top response, getting 70% of the votes. Methanol came in second with 19%, followed by ammonia at 7%, and 4% of respondents mentioned other options. We asked two of our leaders at PowerCell Group to share their thoughts on the findings. Andreas Bodén, Chief Technology Officer: “Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are going to be crucial in areas where switching to electricity is tough. As energy needs increase and industries look for scalable, zero-emission solutions, hydrogen shines with its versatility and long-term potential. These results show a growing understanding of that change.” Victor Åkerlund, Chief Analytics and Sustainability Officer: “Fossil fuels have historically been a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution for energy distribution and use. In a future sustainable energy landscape, we’ll see a mix of different technologies and fuels, each playing its own unique role. Batteries, hydrogen and fuel cells, methanol and ammonia for fuel cells or combustion, all have their sweet spots. It’s encouraging to see that so many of our followers recognise the strong potential of hydrogen in this transition.” Thanks again for your input!
