🌎 The ongoing COP16 Colombia, highlights the critical connection between biodiversity and climate action, building momentum for continuous progress. Bioeconomy is emerging as a promising model, especially for tropical regions, where biodiversity is abundant but socio-economic challenges persist. In a new feature, SEI’s Monica Trujillo and Hugo Chavarría from Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA) explore this transformation and its significance. “The bioeconomy is a powerful strategy for linking the biodiversity and climate change agendas,” says Mónica. We are hosting two bioeconomy events at #COP16, and with the G20’s recent “high-level principles on bioeconomy,” there’s potential for impactful South-South collaboration at future climate meetings, including COP29 Azerbaijan and COP30. “Tropical regions share many similarities—rich in biodiversity yet facing socioeconomic challenges. There is much to learn from one another and many ways to strengthen each other,” Mónica adds. 👉 Start reading: https://buff.ly/4hgoT6m (available also in Spanish) #COP29 #COP30 #PreCOP #G20 #Biodiversity #Bioeconomy #ClimateAction #PeaceWithNature

This weekend marks the first-ever Trade Day at COP16 Colombia 🌍. With global consumption driving biodiversity loss, it is essential for countries to take concrete steps in monitoring and reducing their environmental footprints. At the United Nations Trade Hub, SEI’s Jonathan Green underscores the importance of trade data in supporting the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF): “We must trace the environmental footprint of global consumption and integrate this data into national strategies. Without clear goals in National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, we risk missing our biodiversity targets.” Two years since its adoption, many countries are still developing their national targets. Together with JNCC, we have developed the Global Environmental Impact of Consumption (GEIC) Indicator to help track where and how trade impacts biodiversity. During this UN Biodiversity COP, we need to see strong commitments for footprint reduction in NBSAPs and policies promoting #PeaceWithNature. Discover how the GEIC Indicator can help countries measure the overseas impacts of consumption 🔗 https://buff.ly/3A1mLic #CBDCOP #GBF #TradeDay

💡 Reflections from the Mekong Environmental Resilience Week 🌏 🎙️ Mrs. Kaing Khim, Deputy Director General of the Fisheries Administration, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Cambodia, highlighted the power of blending Local Knowledge with expertise to ensure grassroots voices shape broader policies and practices. 🇰🇭 In Cambodia, communities actively participate in monitoring activities, co-producing knowledge alongside researchers. Speaking at #MERW2024, Mrs. Kaing Khim emphasized, “Our research and action plans must be transparent and straightforward to encourage participation, especially as communities sometimes feel our research doesn’t directly address their immediate needs.” #CommunityEngagement #SustainableDevelopment #PolicyMaking #KnowledgeCoProduction #MekongRegion #LocalKnowledge #Cambodia

Individual, fragmented voluntary net zero commitments by corporations and financial institutions must be reoriented toward collective global energy transitions, according to a new report by SEI's Derik Broekhoff and Cleo Verkuijl. To truly drive ambitious climate action, governments must enact policies that transform these commitments into ground rules for the entire economy, including through carbon pricing, removal of fossil fuel subsidies, support for green technology development, policies to preserve and restore natural ecosystems, and more. Because corporations and financial institutions are committing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions at a pace and scale they cannot achieve alone, further coordination is needed between governments, voluntary net zero initiatives, companies and financial institutions to jointly explore this vision. Read the analysis and recommendations in the report, "Making good on financial sector net zero commitments: Building the road to policy". ⤵️ https://buff.ly/3NBl9yV #NetZero #Decarbonize #FossilFuels #Economy #EconomicPolicy #CarbonNeutrality #RaceToZero #COP29 #PreCOP29
