💧 A new article in the journal Water details how an internet-based #WaterManagement dashboard can help decision-makers managing water resources in a common river basin that transcends national boundaries in Central American countries. By allowing officials in three different countries to visualize the vulnerabilities of shared water resources in the Upper Lempa River Basin, they can make better decisions that benefit their own countries and their neighbors. SEI researchers put this tool to the test and share their findings here ⤵️ cc MDPI #WaterGovernance #WaterResources #CentralAmerica #Guatemala #ElSalvador #Honduras #RiverBasins

Distributive equity is a question of who gets what. In international #AdaptationFinance, those who are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change are in most need of the financial support to adapt. However, most analysis of whether and how adaptation finance reaches the vulnerable has occurred at the global scale. In a new article in Climate Policy Journal, SEI authors propose a framework for assessing #DistributiveEquity of adaptation finance at the national and sub-national levels. 📊 Brazil’s #soy supply chain: what new data reveals Latest Trase - Intelligence for sustainable trade data (2021-2022) shows an increase in #deforestation and land conversion linked to soy expansion in Brazil. 🌱 Key takeaways: 🔹 Soy plantations expanded most in the Cerrado, where deforestation covered an area twice the size of São Paulo 🔹 La Niña-induced droughts led to lower soy production despite a larger planted area 🔹 China, Brazil’s domestic market & the EU are the most exposed to deforestation-linked soy 🔹 Bunge, COFCO & Cargill have the highest deforestation exposure in their supply chains 🔍 This analysis was conducted by Harry B., Florian Gollnow, Michael Lathuilliere, Nicolas Martin, Carina Mueller, Vivian Ribeiro & Clement Suavet. Trase is an initiative we co-founded with Global Canopy. More insights in the repost ⤵️
📊 Brazil soy supply chain data updated The latest Trase data for 2021-2022 shows that #deforestation and conversion linked to the expansion of soy production in Brazil increased in the period. 📉 Yet despite an increase in the total area of soy planted, Brazil saw a decrease in soy production between 2021 and 2022 due mostly to droughts caused by La Niña in the southern region of the country. Soy plantations expanded most in the Cerrado where in 2022 they were associated with deforestation and conversion of an area more than twice the size of the city of São Paulo. The Pampas also experienced high rates of conversion of natural vegetation to #soy. 📈 Due to its large volume of imports, #China remains the market most exposed to deforestation from Brazilian soy, followed by Brazil’s domestic market and EU imports. The large, established traders – Bunge, COFCO and Cargill – are those most exposed to deforestation and conversion in their soy supply chain. 🔍 Find out more about deforestation in the Brazil soy supply chain in our latest insight by Osvaldo Pereira and Paula Bernasconi: https://lnkd.in/eMbJzJ6t

Hydrogen has emerged as a key technology in building a greener future. But even new technologies might be prone to repeating old mistakes, such as being complicit in human rights abuses in the green transition policies. This was one of the takeaways from last week's Nordic Hydrogen Valleys as Energy Hubs Conference. On the other hand, the #hydrogen industry, still in its relative infancy, has the opportunity to mark a departure from the past and proactively take responsibility - especially when governments fail to provide functional legal frameworks, as is the case in the Nordics. We can learn from the past and from current practices that emerge in the absence of functional legal frameworks. SEI's Rasmus Kløcker Larsen shared his knowledge on including local communities in decision making processes based on his research on the Indigenous Sámi lands in the north of Sweden and the ongoing research on negotiated agreements between developers and Sámi reindeer herding communities. The World Health Organization highlights the need to live within 300 metres of green spaces, yet access to #UrbanGreenery is often unequal geographically and socio-economically. Lower-income and marginalized urban communities frequently lack access to quality green spaces and their benefits. This issue is particularly pressing in rapidly growing low- and lower-middle-income countries, where informal settlements are common, but research remains scarce. A new report by SEI’s Heidi Tuhkanen, PhD, Diane Archer, Rachel Pateman and cynthia sitati explores the impacts of urban green spaces in low- and middle-income contexts and how community-led initiatives can complement top-down approaches to planning, restoring and expanding urban nature. Key findings: 🟢 Green spaces in lower-income countries often serve different purposes than those in higher-income areas. 🟢 Equitable outcomes require diverse engagement, including women, youth and people with disabilities. 🟢 Research must go beyond income, incorporating gender, age, ethnicity, (dis)abilities and migrant status. 🗺️ New mapping tool shows #ExtinctionRisk hotspots on a global level. The Land-cover change Impacts on Future Extinctions (LIFE) metric uses habitat data on over 30 000 vertebrate species to show where land-use change -- like converting forest to arable land -- has the highest impact on extinction risk probability for species present in that area. The extinction risk maps can be used at scales from 0.5km-1000 km2 and can estimate the impact of diverse actions that affect change in land cover, from decisions as small as an individual dietary choice through to large-scale conservation projects. Get the detail behind this powerful new tool:

Starting 2025 on the right foot(print): the UK Government recognises the GEIC Indicator as an Official Statistic! 👏 🇬🇧 This milestone cements the Global Environmental Impacts of Consumption (GEIC) Indicator as a breakthrough tool for understanding the environmental impacts of #GlobalConsumption. Developed in partnership by the JNCC and SEI, the GEIC Indicator reveals the environmental costs behind the products we use daily - from deforestation and biodiversity loss to water scarcity. As featured in the latest Open Access Government article, this recognition underscores the tool’s credibility and value for policymakers, researchers, and organisations working to reduce environmental harm. What can the GEIC Indicator do? ✔️ Track environmental impacts of consumption by commodity, country, and year ✔️ Provide actionable insights, such as the deforestation linked to UK imports of specific products ✔️ Support global efforts under #Target16 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to enable sustainable consumption This is a significant step forward in promoting transparency and accountability for our global consumption patterns. 🔗 Read the full article in Open Access Government ⤵️ #SustainableConsumption #EnvironmentalImpact #GlobalBiodiversity #DEFRA
