We Must Move Faster with the Climate Transition – While We Still Can! Are you ready to learn the truth about the state of our planet? Climate change is real and human activities are the main cause. The concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth. The concentration has been rising steadily, and mean global temperatures along with it, since the time of the Industrial Revolution. Global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels hit record high in 2023. Not surprisingly, 2023 is the hottest year on record, with global temperatures close to the 1.5°C limit. Global warming limits to 1.5°C are significant because they would help reduce the risks of devastating consequences, such as extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and biodiversity loss. To prevent warming beyond 1.5°C, we need to reduce emissions by 8% every year from this year to 2030. Why are we not moving faster? Why are we not listening to the dire warnings by top climate researchers? In this session we will meet one of them. Being a brilliant and inspiring storyteller, Professor Benjamin Horton will tell us the truth we need to hear. It is not pretty but it is important. Impact Innovation - Sweden's innovation investment for the 2030s! Impact Innovation is the next generation's strategic innovation program. It is an actor-driven and long term collection of forces aimed at contributing to global competitiveness through sustainable development transformation. The Swedish Energy Agency, Formas and Vinnova stand behind the initiative. As of February, five programs have been granted funding. In the programs, a wide range of actors from business, public activities, academia and civil society will collaborate. Building Urban Capacity for Just Climate Transitions Cities hold significant importance in achieving climate goals. Here, actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change need to be taken while simultaneously attending to social justice and inclusion. Innovative partnerships between research and practice can help guide and realize just climate transitions. Actions aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change encompass a diverse array of approaches. Urban development is intricate and context-specific, involving multiple stakeholders with diverse interests, operating across various sectors and levels of governance. In this complexity, efforts to address climate change must be coupled with the pursuit of equally momentous societal goals related to justice, equality, and inclusion. Merely addressing climate change without considering these factors will not yield sustainable outcomes.
