🔦 Spotlight on Demscore Modules: #UCDP/ #VIEWS 🔦 The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) is the world’s main provider of data on organized violence and is the oldest ongoing data collection project for civil war. The Violence & Impacts Early-Warning System (VIEWS) is an ambitious early-warning system at the frontier of research on conflict forecasting. UCDP's data covers for example civil wars, communal violence, armed groups, violence against civilians and violence between rebel groups. UCDP maintains the UCDP Conflict Encyclopedia, an online database on armed conflicts and organized violence, with information on several aspects of armed conflict like conflict dynamics and conflict resolution, as well as including datasets on organized violence and peacemaking. VIEWS systematically monitors all locations at risk and produces uniform predictions of the number of fatalities in impending state-based conflict (soon to be accompanied by predictions for armed conflict between non-state actors, and violence against civilians). VIEWS is a collaboration between Uppsala University and Peace Research Institute Oslo, bringing together the political Violence Early-Warning System with the interdisciplinary conflict impacts projects Societies at Risk and ANTICIPATE. Included in #Demscore is for example UCDP’s main dataset, the Georeferenced Events Dataset. It details incidents where fatal armed force was used by an organized actor against another organized actor, or against civilians. Read more about the data sources provided by UCDP and VIEWS, and how they are prepared and included in #Demscore at https://lnkd.in/dHvrQ-gX Download the UCDP and VIEWS static datasets: https://lnkd.in/dNNYQcnY UCDP and VIEWS are hosted at Uppsala University. #conflict #ViolentConflict #peace #prediction #EarlyWarningSystems

🔦 Spotlight on #Demscore modules: #QoG The Quality of Government Institute (QoG) conducts research on the causes, consequences and nature of Good Governance, focusing on concepts related to Quality of Government, transparency, and public administration. The main objective of QoG’s research is to address the theoretical and empirical problem of how political institutions of high quality (i e trustworthy, reliable, impartial, uncorrupted and competent government institutions) can be created and maintained. A second objective is to study the effects of Quality of Government on several policy areas, like #health, the #environment, #SocialPolicy, and #poverty. The datasets combine data from multiple sources and include a wide variety of variables relevant for interdisciplinary research, to provide some of the largest and most comprehensive datasets on governance. The Demscore infrastructure includes a total of 17 datasets from QoG, covering a time span from 1946 -2023 worldwide. One example is the QoG EQI Regional Level 2021 Dataset, which focuses on both perceptions and experiences with public sector corruption, along with the extent to which citizens believe various public sector services are impartially allocated and of good quality in the EU. Read more about the data sources provided by QoG and how they are prepared and included in #Demscore at https://lnkd.in/durX5H7j Download the QoG static datasets: https://lnkd.in/dATvcXas QoG is hosted at the Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg. #SocialScienceData #QualityOfGovernment #governance #transparency #PublicAdministration #government

🔦 Spotlight on Demscore Modules: COMPLAB The Comparative Policy Laboratory (COMPLAB) provides policy data across three different policy strands: #environmental-, #social-, and #migration policy, combining data from three projects and databases: SPIN, GRACE and MIGPOL. COMPLAB's aim is to improve possibilities for comparative research in the three policy areas, of relevance for both ecological and social sustainability, as many of the challenges in today’s society are interlinked. Demscore includes data from all three COMPLAB projects. SPIN, the Social Policy Indicators Database, include seven datasets covering different aspects of social policy. SPIN makes available comparative data on social rights and duties of citizens. To date, SPIN covers 36 countries, of which several have data on core social policy programs from 1930 to 2019. GRACE, Governing the Anthropocene – Environmental Policy and Outcomes in a Comparative Perspective, is a study on environmental governance, and has created a dataset of national policy responses for environmental management and protection in 37 countries for the period 1970-2022. MIGPOL, the Migration Policy Database consists of a range of indicators in the field of comparative migration policy research, as an open-access data infrastructure for scholars and students who are interested in the ways public policies intersect with the movement of individuals across international borders. 🔦 Spotlight on the Demscore Modules: REPDEM The Representative Democracy Data Archive (REPDEM) contains unique data on governments, parliaments and political parties for (mainly European) parliamentary democracies, and is a world-leading database for research on the competition for government in Europe. The data can for example be used for studies of political coalitions and minority governments. One example is the graph in the second picture, which shows the average number of days for government formation after elections in European countries. #REPDEM builds on The European Representative Democracy Data Archive’s (ERDDA), previous international and comparative projects on European parliamentary democracy, but will soon include countries outside of Europe as well. REPDEM includes the Party Government in Europe Database (PAGED). The PAGED project concerns key issues of today’s representative democracy, namely delegation, accountability, government formation, governance and government dissolution. Read more about the data sources provided by REPDEM and how they are prepared and included in #Demscore at https://lnkd.in/gVqdzPSE Download the REPDEM static datasets: https://lnkd.in/grFYaWJ8 The REPDEM project is hosted by the Political Science Department, Umeå University.

🔦 Spotlight on the Demscore Modules: H-DATA The Historical Data Archive (H-DATA) is a hub of historical country-level data going as far back as the French revolution or even further. H-DATA works to collect, integrate, and curate historical data from Demscore’s other modules. By extending data back into time, H-DATA helps researchers to answer critical questions about the past but to also understand the origins of, and find historical parallels to present-day problems. The Demscore infrastructure includes five datasets from H-DATA, covering a time span from 1750 to 2017. For example, the H-DATA Foreign Minister Dataset consists of comparative historical data on foreign ministers’ background and reasons for leaving office in the world’s 13 former and current great powers from 1789 to the present. Another example is the Historical Conflict Dataset (HCD), which merges multiple existing datasets on wars from 1816-1945 to create a comprehensive list of interstate, intrastate, and extrasystemic wars during this time period. Read more about the data sources provided by H-DATA and how they are prepared and included in #Demscore: https://lnkd.in/dKwzwU9X Download the H-DATA static dataset: https://lnkd.in/dPVpAp6u H-DATA is hosted at the Department of Political Science, Stockholm University
