Some of the takeaways from the annual CERAWeek'24: - Demand for oil and gas continues to rise alongside solar, wind and biofuels - Despite geopolitical turmoils, global oil prices have remained stable, in a range between $75 and $85 per barrel - This has not accelerated the transition to electric vehicles and renewable fuels just yet even though parties are building towards energy security - Carbon sequestration technology and hydrogen fuels will continue their vital roles towards decarbonization - OPEC forecasts relatively strong oil demand and economic growth, a view that encourages more oil and gas activity and mergers

Will ammonia become the new alternative clean fuel for vessels? With IMO 2020 in our rear view mirror, we look towards the achieving the targets set by IMO 2050. An ambitious goal of net zero GHG emissions from international shipping will force shipowners to tinker with alternatives. Ammonia, by and large used in Agriculture as fertilizer, when produced with renewable energy is referred to as 'Green Ammonia'. A zero-carbon fuel that would aid in shipowners meeting the IMO 2050 emissions reduction targets. While there is great optimism within the industry towards 'Green Ammonia' for decarbonisation, the challenges such as toxicity to crew and marine life remain. As we bid adieu to a very eventful 2023 and usher in the new year, here’s a warm and truly heartfelt happy new year from me and the team at calibr:e.
