Joined Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) President, Mr Melvin Yong, for a visit to Element Testing Services (S) Pte Ltd, a leading global provider of Testing, Inspection, and Certification services. Element Testing has been a partner of CASE and our CaseTrust accreditation schemes. For example, under the CaseTrust-Singapore Jewellers Association accreditation requirements, all accredited jewellers must send their gold to Element Testing for gold testing to ensure its authenticity. During the visit, we learnt how Element could measure and reduce formaldehyde presence. CASE President had previously raised concerns related to high formaldehyde levels arising from new furniture and we were glad to see that there are ready solutions for the industry to adopt, to mitigate such issues. CASE will continue to push for tighter formaldehyde measures, to safeguard the health of consumers. #consumerprotection

CCCS has commenced investigations with unannounced visits to three “HairFun” salons operating in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, Toa Payoh Central and Tampines Central for suspected unfair trade practices. Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) had received a number of complaints concerning the sales tactics at the mentioned HairFun Salons, including practices such as: 🔴Targeting and exploiting elderly consumers 🔴Concealing payment amounts during NETS transactions 🔴Charging significantly higher prices without prior agreement 🔴Billing consumers for unwanted treatments or packages without their clear consent During the unannounced visits, CCCS exercised powers under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act 2003 and obtained information and documents at the respective HairFun Salons. The director of the operator of HairFun Salons was also issued a CCCS notice to produce information and documents. CCCS will continue with its investigations and consider the evidence gathered to determine whether to take enforcement action against the respective HairFun Salons. *** 𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭? *** #ConsumerProtection enforcement is often an uphill battle, especially as concerns #unfair business practices of #SMEs. 💅 Nail salons are one such example: 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 of the industry is rather challenging because small operators are able to open and shut down their shops easily. 🇸🇬 Earlier this month, the 𝗡𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 chain in #Singapore was fined and its manager jailed for four months. It was the first time that contempt of court proceedings were instituted by the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore against a business found to have engaged in 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 as well as 𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀. Similar to the customer in below news, I, too, was pressured at one of the outlets a few months ago (but did not end up buying a package). The high number of complaints against nail salons - 89 this year already - has prompted the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Nationwide Association for International Licenses and Skills (NAILS) in April to accredit beauty and nail salons with its 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸.
