IPUR is a research and outreach institute which seeks to help the public better understand risk issues in Asia.
About us
The Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk (IPUR) at the National University of Singapore was launched in 2017. Established through funding from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and the National University of Singapore, IPUR is the first international research and public outreach institution of its kind in Asia. IPUR seeks to narrow the gap between people’s perceptions and real world risks by undertaking research on the scientific understanding of risk and its practical application through a multi-disciplinary approach. Bringing together science, engineering, social sciences, and humanities, our current research efforts span across three areas: Data and Technology, Environment and Climate, as well as Health and Food Safety. Through outreach activities, IPUR will also enhance public dialogue on risk issues in Asia and internationally. Combined with its research and educational efforts, IPUR aspires to be a world-leading node of excellence to pave the way for policymakers, regulators, business leaders, scientists, and the general public to collectively make better decisions for the betterment of society. New and exciting content now available on our edX “Understanding and Communicating Risk” online course! Brought to you by our collaborators over at Risk Know-How, Maricarmen Climént and Alfie Hoar introduce and discuss three concepts surrounding #risk and #decision making. 1. Uncertainty In a world where few things are 100% certain, understanding uncertainty is essential for informed decision-making. In science, uncertainties arise from what we don’t know, the precision of our calculations, and the quality of the available evidence. This short video provides basic guidance on how to communicate all types of uncertainty, to help individuals and communities navigate uncertainty in their decision-making. 2. Communicating benefits and harms When making decisions there is no one correct way to act, and the best option often isn’t obvious. To help people make informed decision, it is essential to present both the potential benefits and harms clearly and transparently. Get some tips on how to communicate information in a balanced way, avoiding common pitfalls. 3. Instincts We often rely on gut feelings, believing they lead us to the right choice. However, our intuition or instinct can often mislead us due to unconscious biases in our brain influencing our decision-making such as confirmation bias and anchoring bias. This short video guides you on how to recognise these biases and avoid them when making decisions. Enrol for the self-paced version now! https://lnkd.in/gHb8Jwpf

🌱 Did you know that eating 1 kg of beef produces 30 kg of CO2e emissions – equivalent to driving over 100 km in a petrol car? 🚗🥩 This was just one of many insights shared by Assoc Prof Alberto Salvo at IPUR’s "Carbon Crunch" event, held with NUS Sustainability CONNECT. Assoc Prof Salvo explained how high-carbon foods, like beef, contribute to 25% of global greenhouse gases emitted by the food system. He emphasised shifting towards sustainable alternatives like chicken or plant-based proteins. 🌍🥗 Dr Olivia Jensen, IPUR Deputy Director, highlighted Singapore's shift from producing its own food in the 1970s to importing over 90% of it today, resulting in a dramatic rise in emissions from food transport. 🌎✈️ In a hands-on activity, participants built mock meals under a 3 kg CO2e budget, sparking discussions on how everyday choices – like reducing beef (2.4 kg CO2e per 100g) and pork (1.2 kg CO2e) – can lower our personal emissions. 💬🍽️ The takeaway? Our food choices matter and the collectively desire to manage our carbon “foodprint” signals to governments and firms that people want change and are willing to do their part. In Singapore, where over 90% of our food is imported, our consumption habits play a significant role in contributing to our carbon footprint. Did you know that red meats like beef, mutton, and pork are among the most carbon-intensive foods? Each person in Singapore contributes to 954 kg of greenhouse gas emissions annually through food consumption alone. Reducing our food-related emissions is crucial for a sustainable future. By focusing on more plant-based diets, minimising food waste, and supporting local produce, we can make impactful changes on the environment. 🔍 Want to learn more about how our food choices impact the environment and how we can make a difference?
