During their visit to #PunggolDigitalDistrict (PDD), Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA)’s International Panel of Experts (IPE) observed how architectural design enables natural connections between industry and academia. The seamless integration of business and academia spaces, alongside public amenities and green spaces, creates an environment where different communities converge and creative collisions happen naturally. "The future of industrial space planning lies in creating complete communities. A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research will invest about $500 million to establish a new National Semiconductor Translation and Innovation Centre (NSTIC) R&D fabrication facility (R&D Fab) at JTC nanoSpace @ Tampines.   NSTIC (R&D Fab)’s facilities and expertise can be used by smaller companies, which may find substantial upfront investments out of reach. The NSTIC (R&D Fab) will house 12-inch (300mm) industry-grade tools that can enable faster production and cost savings, and will be used as a shared infrastructure resource, complemented by fab operations and research expertise.   NSTIC (R&D Fab) will be a #collaborative hub where public and private sector players, and IHLs, share access to state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities, tools, and fabrication operations, providing the opportunity to bridge the gap for lab-to-fab #semiconductor R&D translation. The national facility is designed to drive advanced semiconductor research and #innovation, with an initial focus on advanced packaging technologies. “The NSTIC (R&D Fab) will scale up our capacity to enable similar #SMEs and the broader semiconductor industry here to build new capabilities, develop and commercialise globally competitive technologies, and create high value jobs in Singapore,” said DPM Gan Kim Yong. Commencing operations in 2027, it aims to strengthen the local semiconductor #ecosystem and bring technologies closer to market-ready solutions. Brambe, a lifestyle brand operating within JTC's Geylang East Industrial Estate, is demonstrating how creativity can be melded with eco-consciousness. They are creating homeware and customised corporate trophies by upcycling plastics, glass, and coffee grounds. “The word that comes to mind when I think of trash is ‘resource’,” observes co-founder Amanda Tay. “Before anything becomes trash, it was first a resource. Making strides towards a more sustainable future! Croda Singapore is building a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant in partnership with Nano Sun Pte Ltd on #JurongIsland. This project is an example of #testbedding to full-scale deployment, following a successful trial under the 2021 Jurong Island #Innovation Challenge (JIIC), and it will help reduce carbon emissions by 25% and significantly reduce our reliance on freshwater.   “We are excited to scale up this solution to support more industries in achieving water #sustainability and tackling tough environmental challenges. The strong Singapore innovation #ecosystem has enabled local #SMEs like NanoSun to grow and innovate,” said Mr Wong Ann Chai, Managing Director of NanoSun.   The new full-scale plant is designed to treat up to 7,000 cubic meters of wastewater per month, equivalent to 2.7 Olympic-sized swimming pools, and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.   Mr Boon Khai Tan, Chief Executive Officer of JTC said, “Jurong Island lies at the heart of our sustainability endeavours. As announced by Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore) this afternoon, JTC CEO Boon Khai Tan will step down from his role on 31 March 2025 to pursue other interests, after spending over four years as CEO of JTC. We would like to thank him for his inspiring leadership and invaluable contributions towards transforming and strengthening industries through industrial development. Under his leadership, JTC completed next-generation estates such as Punggol Digital District. He also led the push on building new estates such as Jurong Innovation District. A warm welcome to Jacqueline Poh, the current Managing Director of Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), who will assume the position of CEO of JTC on 1 April 2025. She will also be appointed as a member of the JTC Board in an ex-officio capacity. She was previously Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office Strategy Group, the founding Chief Executive of GovTech, and Managing Director of the Infocommunications Development Authority.
