Murdoch Green Economy Research Series continues with an absolutely engaging presentation entitled “Spying on Ocean Giants: How animal motion sensing and machine learning provide novel insights into elusive marine species” by Dr Adrian Gleiss, a marine biologist based at Murdoch University’s Harry Butler Institute. Studying large marine animals like whales and sharks is tough – they are often out of sight and hard to track! Dr Adrian Gleiss' research with advancement in new tech is changing the game. Miniature cameras and motion sensors attached to these incredible creatures are giving us a window in their world like never before. Much like smart-devices have revolutionised the way humans track our movements and behaviour, smart devices attached to animals have done the same for wildlife research. Understanding their needs and behaviours help us make smarter decisions for their conservation and ensure these ocean giants thrive. Let’s keep exploring and protecting our oceans.
